Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”

Terrific. A dreamy delight if a little bit on the light side.

Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

What a great movie, deserving of its acclaim and awards. I expected a singing tribute to Los Angeles; it turned out to be a tribute to dreamers in general, with much more dancing than singing. For all of the vibrant colors on the screen, it's the vivid emotions that come through the most, especially in the final ten minutes as the film ascends to a whole other level. I could nitpick a few details, like the lack of subtlety in the song lyrics, but overall this is just great.

Lorrie Cozzens: “It sucked.”

I found La La Land unbearable. Bored me to tears and I ended up fast forwarding through at least half of it. Although beautifully arranged and visually attractive, I wasn't invested in these characters at all. The singing was unimaginative and awful.

For the time investment, Moonlight was a far better film.

Scott Hardie: The controversy rages on. :-)

I can understand that reaction. One does not have to dislike musicals to dislike La La Land. − January 22, 2018 • more by Scott
