Evie Totty: “It ruled.”

I went into the theater a bit reluctant. I am somewhat a fan of Apatow but in recent years the toilet humor has just been too much for me. But a friend wanted to go to have a break from all the action movies I've been scheduling for the group.

And I'm so glad she did. It was a wonderful story about a family 'getting older'. I'm not sure it missed anything really.

And the laughs. My goodness the laughs. I believe my face was sore yesterday from laughing so hard. I hate to say this (though I haven't seen Django Unchained yet) but if you only get to see one movie over the holidays (well... other than The Hobbit) then see this one. You won't be disappointed.

Matthew Preston: “It sucked.”

This movie should have been called: "This is 40 if you're a rich, white, self-absorbed, A-hole living in California." At first I thought there was an underlying lesson, like there is more to life than money, or something to do with raising children through guidance and caring instead of assuming ownership. NOPE. I had absolutely no compassion for anyone and the idiotic situations they put themselves in. I understand that it is a comedy and I should lighten up, but all of the laughs are attempted through self-inflicted misery and malice, which is just depressing. I disliked this for the same reasons I stopped watching many sitcoms in the 90's (Drew Carey, Roseanne, & Coach for example): They were just plain mean.
