One by one, the group was rounded up in their dreams by Randolph Carter, who flew them in a hot air balloon up to the moon of the Dreamlands. There they found Alexandria Knight in hiding with Lawrence Tate, concerned that her mind would be used for evil again. She said that the Red Death was sentient and nearly done taking over Earth, with Imhotep to rule as its immortal emperor, and that they needed to find a woman named Sadett in the city of Alexandria. They enlisted Nemo to get them there, then searched around town using Alexandria Knight's directions until they found the underground necropolis. There, among the sarcophagi and tunnels, deceased acquaintances appeared in mirrors to talk to them once more: Phineas Fogg, Gilbert Gittings, Michelle LeDuece, François, and Dracula appeared, with the latter confident that he would fight them again soon. They found Sadett, appearing transparently before an ankh carving. She sent them on a quest to kill a lich named Ptahmes in a pyramid buried under the desert to prove themselves worthy of her help.

The group debated whether to use the mirrors to question other people they used to know. Elise chose to question former ally John Sheppard, an Egyptologist, who gave them advice to avoid the "curse" of the mummy Ptahmes, although he said strangely that he had never heard of any such person important enough to have a pyramid. After several fruitless conversations, the group decided to buy dynamite to help with the upcoming battle. A magic pigeon arrived in the store, bearing the voice of Sagesse's mother, who spoke of intruders breaking into her house, their leader fat and dark-skinned with gold makeup around his eyes. The fastest way to get to her hometown of Arles was a train, but eventually that night they arrived and found the La Roque house ransacked and her family missing, along with a locket belonging to Elise's mother. Hieroglyphics painted on the wall were a bird, a ship, the Earth, a pyramid, a person in chains, and a skull.

After sleeping overnight, the group set off in the desert, eventually resorting to having Elise and Sagesse fly to save time. Caleb found the tip of the pyramid in the sand and Elise tunneled through it. Deke was enchanted by a snake named Kaa that spoke to him, requiring rescue once it coiled around him. Caleb touched a mural and became covered by a swarm of beetles, but his stone skin made it easy to ignore them. When Elise touched one of the beetles, it burrowed into her arm and up into her neck before Deke stabbed it and extracted it. Gao translated a wall of text about an ancient scholar who met gods and was given power over life itself, who created a pyramid and planned to spread his army of dead around the world.

Sagesse saved Elise from an iron maiden trap. The group made their way deeper into the pyramid where they encountered Ptahmes, the man they once knew as Menes: He was a scholar of magic at the historical burning of Alexandria who Elise had resurrected, who had spent two millennia since then studying dark arts. The group quickly overcame him and his mummified minions, severing his head and burning his body. They looted the pyramid and found several magic artifacts, including leather armor, a sword, a kite, a crossbow-like weapon, and a grimoire. They returned to Sadett, who asked them to step forward through a portal in the wall.
