Strange Aeons

game session #18
played on December 7, 2009

At the house of seven gables, Elise was taught how to lift stones with her mind, and the women inducted her as a member of The Circle. Gao played "witch trials" with a neighbor boy and learned to say a few words with Hepzibah's discipline. Katerina defended Uncle Venner from arrest by the police, but Jacques's antagonism got him beaten and locked in a jail cell overnight. Rachael informed Katerina of a dangerous, unnatural evil locked in the basement. John and Katerina discovered evidence that could put Jaffrey in prison for a decades-old crime. Gao had a vision of Alexandria and Lawrence being beaten and tied up, and with Theresa's help, the group decoded their location: The Tate household in Dunwich, Connecticut. Traveling their by buggy, they found the town decrepit and deserted except for violent attackers. Auguste Dupin met them at the Tate house and revealed Lawrence's identity, saying that the man couldn't stop living false identities. A letter from mother Lily Tate said she had gone to nearby Arkham to find him, and the group left for Arkham to find her and Lawrence. When a mob closed in on them, they ran back to the house, but found only Dupin's head, hands, and empty clothes, filled with a pink goo. (more detail)

Sanitarium

game session #19
played on December 14, 2009

Jacques helped the group escape the Tate household by exploding it with the bloodthirsty villagers (and himself) inside. John object-read a silver canister found in the house and had a stupefying vision of otherworldly creatures, and Elise spotted a blinking star in the sky. The group traveled to Arkham, a town said to give people nightmares and hallucinations. They settled into a hotel and discovered that Gao was a girl when they tried to bathe her. This led to buying new clothes the next day, and meeting a Miskatonic University student who took an interest in Gao's apparent "visions." Learning that Alexandria and Lawrence were being kept in an insane asylum called "Bedlam" by the locals, they walked up the hill to Bethlem Home for the Insane. Several patients in the parlor described seeing horrible visions and alien space rocks. The group met the paranoid director of the facility, Charles Dexter Ward, who insisted that Gao needed to be committed and "helped" for her visions, but the group refused. When he left, the group fought orderlies to leave, then sneaked upstairs to the rooms where Lawrence and Alexandria were incarcerated. (more detail)

Effect and Cause

game session #20
played on December 21, 2009

Alexandria and Lawrence were drugged and restrained, but the group freed them and found their belongings in the asylum basement. While following the scent of Lily Tate's perfume, they found a secret tunnel out of the basement, but sealed it shut when a ghoul chased them. The further they walked from the asylum, the more transparent Alexandria became. They ran into the same college student again, and this time learned that he was Randolph Carter, paranormal investigator. Carter revealed that he had sleep clairvoyance (unlike Gao's waking visions), and could advise them what to do based on what he had seen them doing next, but he declined to reveal too much because they could lose their minds if they learned things when unprepared. He said that Alexandria's soul had been extracted. They followed his advice to break into Charles Dexter Ward's mansion, where they discovered that Ward's family tree led back to a necromancer named Joseph Curwen, and they found a corpse that looked just like the young Ward in photographs. In an underground tunnel, they found a secret room of skulls arranged in some kind of psychic array, with a space reserved for "Knight," just before the ghoul burst in. (more detail)

Justin Conner as John Sheppard

Of Vision and Reality

game session #21
played on January 4, 2010

Defeating the ghoul, the group followed the tunnel back to the hospital basement, determined to stop Charles Dexter Ward. At Gao's insistence, John object-read a skull labeled Merlin, which led to a dreamlike encounter with the ancient wizard's spirit. Merlin warned that Ward's mad quest for power was opening a rift between worlds in this town, and the group needed to find him in the Dreamlands before he made contact with the Great Ones and brought destruction to Earth. Talking to several inmates led to tips for fighting the visions, a painting of the group on a glowing white ship in space, and Lawrence's comatose mother Lily. After finding Ward's intangible body asleep in a coffin, they returned to the hotel, where agents of the Catholic church informed Katerina that her sabbatical had been canceled and she was needed for a mission immediately. Without her, the group questioned Randolph Carter, who confirmed what Merlin had said, and revealed that the alien who had impersonated Auguste Dupin was scout gathering intelligence.

Justin Conner as John Sheppard
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Nathan Quam as Lawrence Tate
Raquel Hartzell as Alexandria Knight

earned points:

Cthulhu Fhtagn

game session #22
played on January 11, 2010

When the group went to sleep for the night, they found themselves witnessing each other's dreams. Gao was beaten by a cultist in a black robe. Alexandria was threatened by Father Blenk. Elise participated in a voodoo ritual. John sparred with his friend and mentor. Lawrence relived his father's accidental self-inflicted shooting during a bank robbery. Under pressure from Randolph Carter, Lawrence admitted that the vision was a lie that he had made up, and confessed that he had shot his own father dead when the robbery got out of control. Finally past their nightmares, the group found themselves in a forest against a starry night sky. Beyond a creek filled with mirror-like leeches, they met an elf who demanded Melchitt for food, which made Gao run off. They were pursued by a number of the elves, which Carter called zoog, and a battle ensued that nearly set the forest on fire. John killed one of the zoog prisoners after the fight, and was reprimanded by Carter. He led them into the shimmering city of Celephaïs to find the king, Kuranes, and they stopped to talk to cat citizens along the way, who led them to a ghastly realization: Dupin's brain was alive inside the silver canister. At the king's tower, they had to answer riddles that demonstrated lateral thinking unique to humans. (more detail)

Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc

The End of the World

game session #23
played on January 18, 2010

The group discovered the king Kuranes dead in his quarters, and recognized his body from the asylum morgue. He was embalmed according to ancient Egyptian ritual. Seeking information about the Great Ones, they visited the library, where an albino boy from the asylum was looking for a copy of the Necronomicon, sent by Ward to pick it up since Ward had left his copy behind in haste. They followed the boy's explanation to the lighthouse and out onto a ship, where they were set adrift by Nyarlathotep, a figure from the Great Ones' pantheon known for meddling in human affairs, who had long ago posed as an Egyptian pharaoh. The ship drifted out to sea and then beyond the edge of the world, sailing across space until it crashed on the moon. Before tentacled moon-beasts could eat them, John convinced them of the group's peaceful intentions, and they teleported the group to the location of Alexandria's missing soul: The inaccessible mountaintop where the Great Ones slumbered inside the castle Kadath. Ward had found a way here, and waited with Lily Tate. He reunited Alexandria and demanded that she make telepathic contact with the Great Ones so that he could gain their power. The group attacked him, and in the battle, he dissipated Lily into a red mist that made her "one with the Red Death." Despite his crippling spells, they defeated him and destroyed his body, agreeing to wake up to get Alexandria away from Kadath quickly. (more detail)

in attendance:
Justin Conner as John Sheppard
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Nathan Quam as Lawrence Tate
Raquel Hartzell as Alexandria Knight
