Chapter 21: Arles
The game continued from Chapter 20: Falls Run.
game session #102
played on June 18, 2012
One by one, the group lost consciousness in Falls Run and awakened in a forest in southern France. Agents of the R.G., Sagesse's intelligence agency, were investigating a giant wolf called the Beast of Gévaudon and mistook them for mauling victims. When Sagesse learned that her brother Jacques was the original agent on the case and had gone missing, she threw herself into the investigation. Meanwhile, Elise was seized by two agents calling her "la femme du ciel" for her flight through the Paris sky in full view of reporters several weeks earlier, and was questioned as a potential enemy of the state. When Caleb tried to use mind control to free her, he too was questioned. After being given orders to spy on Elise, Sagesse learned that an R.G. badge had turned up in a pawn shop in her hometown of Arles, where no agents were stationed. The group traveled there and Elijah chased a pickpocket into ruins of a Roman coliseum. The badge had been pawned to pay back a debt to a local loan shark, who the group tracked down to her gambling hall. After out-betting her in a lengthy game of baccarat, they compelled her to say what Jacques had been after: "His greatest childhood dream." (more detail)

Chez la Roque
game session #103
played on July 2, 2012
The group learned that gypsies were outside of town selling magical wares, and visited the camp to question them. Sagesse learned that her brother had purchased an item that could grant three wishes, but came with a curse that twisted the owner's words. After purchasing various potions and weapons, and trying in vain to cancel the spell that kept Elise out of the Manor (her tongue turned blue in the process), Sagesse acquired a spell that could magically lead her to her brother. The path took her into the coliseum basement, where Elise peeled open a dirty dungeon wall to reveal a 1500-year-old skeleton with a gold tooth just like Jacques had. Sagesse was despondent but gathered her composure. At Sagesse's parents' home, they talked Jacques's son into giving up the "toy" he had found: A monkey's paw that Sagesse reset upon taking ownership. On Caleb's advice, she spent her first wish to know what her brother's childhood dream was, and the group found themselves transported back to 1876, where they were children. Young Jacques was drawing himself as a Roman gladiator. (more detail)
Sagesse for cautious use of wishes
Crossing the Rubicon
game session #104
played on July 9, 2012
After weighing her options, Sagesse wished to undo the paw's previous two wishes. This just made things worse, as they were still stuck in 1876 but with changed conditions (Sagesse blind and Jacques injured). The father of the loan shark they had met previously harassed Sagesse's father about his debt, forcing him to work. At Caleb's advice to wish that everything would just go back to normal, Sagesse did so and found herself alone in a muddy street wearing a Roman toga. She made her way to the brand-new coliseum and learned that the year was 415, in the reign of Constantine III. Elijah was a doomed prisoner, who had to fight two lions and escaped with deep slashes. Elise freed herself from slave work doing construction and learned more about the corrupt emperor. Caleb discovered that he was "the Incredible Claudius," a famous gladiator from Rome, but his interrupting of Elijah's death was booed by the crowd. When Sagesse and Elijah talked their way into the emperor's tent, he sentenced them to execution, but they spotted Jacques la Roque posing as his personal physician.

When in Rome
game session #105
played on July 16, 2012
Sagesse groveled to the emperor save her life, and learned that her brother Jacques had gotten himself enslaved as the emperor's personal physician. Elise found Caleb duelling in the arena as "the Incredible Claudius." Seeing his portrait, she realized that Claudius must have been one of Caleb's previous lives, since they learned in Atlanta that he had been reincarnated many times. Caleb killed a younger gladiator in battle, but was seriously wounded until Sagesse arrived to treat his injuries. Elijah impressed the emperor with a show of strength and was sentenced to fight "Claudius" to the death. Jacques and Elijah cooked up a plot to assassinate the emperor for the betterment of ancient mankind. The rest of the group burst into the room to stop them from altering history, but the emperor turned out to be a lot more dangerous than he seemed: His body, easily cleaved by swords, reformed like liquid. Sagesse and Elise set him on fire and reduced him to a bubbling pile of goo. The group found themselves back in 1899, where Sagesse's father had become a rich man, free of financial hardship. The group deduced that the loan shark who had appeared in two forms and the emperor had all been the same creature, a doppelgänger. When they killed him in ancient Rome, the shark never existed in the present to sell Jacques the monkey's paw, so the wishes were undone. Sagesse received a letter with details for another assignment, solving murders in Zurich.

Sagesse for devising a way to kill the doppelgänger
