Illimitable Dominion

game session #1
played on July 27, 2009

Seven strangers found themselves in a mansion: Aidan the occult hunter, Alexandria the madame, Celio the violinist, Elise the reporter, John the archeologist, Katerina the missionary, and Lawrence the locksmith. The characters awoke in separate rooms at a masquerade ball on New Years Eve, 1898. Each remembered a different way of getting to this party without an invitation, but none remembered what happened after they arrived, their memories clouded somehow. Celio and Lawrence (under the alias "Ben") witnessed the death of a terrified party guest named Berenice, who sweat blood and collapsed, then Celio rescued Lawrence from the icy grip of a spirit choking him. Elsewhere, Aidan and Katerina talked terrified guest William Wilson out of jumping from a balcony into the freezing snowstorm outside, then comforted other guests. Aidan confronted an apparent zombie and killed him with one shot to the head. Elsewhere, Elise found a maid who had apparently invited other people to this party, then a bloody ghost in a bathtub. Joined by John and Alexandria, they questioned the spirit, who said he was a Hungarian noble named Prospero who was cursed to die a painful death at a masquerade ball each time an ebony clock struck midnight, until the twelfth time when his soul and that of his guests would be destroyed. With four hours to go, Alexandria found a window and broke her way out with Vinny's help, but Elise and John talked her into staying to break the curse as clocks in the house chimed eight o'clock. The Uninvited

game session #2
played on August 3, 2009

Continuing to explore the house, Celio and Lawrence found the body of the maid who had warned the group to find the way out by decoding the letters on the ceilings. After encountering a fiery spirit who begged them to destroy the ebony clock before midnight, and a giant spider, they released Madeline, the sister of the house's owner Roderick, from her entombment. She became inhuman and bit Celio, who had no choice but to set her on fire. The men agreed that they needed to find help. Across the house, the rest of the group met Katerina and Aidan, realizing that the fat zombie Aidan had shot was a dockworker named Ludwigson that Aidan and Elise had tracked to the house after he delivered a package from Hungary there weeks earlier. They also found a deformed, dead infant "buried" in a trunk, apparently the love child of Madeline and Roderick, and they also found John's professor acquaintance dead at a piano. When all seven player characters united, they compared the letters they had found on the ceilings of the rooms, killing the giant spider to expose one last letter. With these symbols, they began to decode the solution that they hoped would lead to a way out, as the clocks chimed ten o'clock. (more detail)

The House with a Clock in Its Walls

game session #3
played on August 10, 2009

The characters decoded the ceiling letters as "bludgeon," "golden bug" and "log bundle" before settling on "undo globe," but smashing the wooden globe in the library didn't seem to help. Confronted by a skeletal demon called Mather Tuck, John's quick thinking saved the group in battle by knocking it off the stairs. Gaining entry into a laboratory, the group found Moldavia's master, a mad scientist named Roderick Usher who did not like to be interrupted. He said that he was a student of the Red Death, a powerful evil force that came to Earth in ancient times. He had arranged this masquerade ball to trigger the final death of Prospero, where the Red Death would arrive personified, and he planned to seize its power then. Elise shot Usher to immobilize him and wound up killing him. The group found the ebony clock in a booby-trapped chest and worked together to destroy it, breaking the curse with minutes to spare before midnight. As they tried to leave the mansion, the landing in front of the house cracked open, revealing that Usher's body had transformed into a giant, two-story spider. Elise and Aidan fell in battle with it. Katerina's heroic action destroyed it, but brought it down on top of her in a pool of blood. The group worked together to rescue her while meeting C. Auguste Dupin, an investigator who arrived offering to help. (more detail)

Background Check

game session #4
played on August 17, 2009

Their battle outside the mansion won, the group accepted C. Auguste Dupin's offer to take them to a safehouse in Baltimore where they could eat and stay the night. He made allusions to the Red Death beginning to corrupt their bodies, and gave weight to John's theories about ancient Egyptians by saying that's when the Red Death first appeared on Earth. At the safehouse, Dupin questioned each of them privately, while Elise learned from a guard that they belonged to La Lumière, a secretive organization that went to great lengths to study the Red Death's effect on the world. In the morning, Dupin said that the group's stories had "checked out" and explained his group in more detail, saying that the group's interest in learning more about the Red Death was similar to La Lumière's. He offered them an assignment, which would lead to their initiation if they succeeded: Infiltrate a cult in Philadelphia who La Lumière had already lost a member investigating, with passage and lodging paid for. The group accepted, and ran errands around town, most notably Aidan seeking promotion and Katerina seeking a sabbatical from the Catholic Church. Together, the group boarded a train to Philadelphia and listened to Aidan's explanation of his true nature as a VIO agent, feeling a new bond as they agreed to work together as a team. (more detail)
