Connections

game session #211
played on August 9, 2017

Edward Weston departed via portal. Sagesse led the group to a library in London, where they failed to learn about Cthulhu but did get some interpretations about the Antichrist. Caleb was called a murderer and used his magic amulet to hide in plain sight. Sherlock found Moriarty's journal in his pocket and they discovered more about what the "professor" had been plotting in Krakatoa. A priest mentioned hearing about an underground cult in Berlin, and suggested that if the Antichrist was about to be born, one place to find him would be in maternity wards in hospitals. They bought an overnight train ticket to Berlin, then slept in the Manor while Marmaduke made friends on the train. Sagesse willingly went to sleep and dreamed of an encounter with Edgar Cayce, who said he had been astral-projecting when the original Manor was destroyed and was now trapped in dreams and the astral plane. Sagesse found dreamwalker Randolph Carter and pleaded with him to try to reach Alexandria, though he warned that she might be lost to madness. In the morning, they entered the market in Berlin, where Marmaduke snatched breakfast sausage and Gao found the initials "C.H.A." painted on some manhole covers. They decided next to find another priest who might know more about the cult and/or the Antichrist.

Caleb Lonergan Must Die!

game session #212
played on August 16, 2017

Through a priest, the group found a local man, Metzengerstein, who had a dream about a "spawn of Satan" being born in the city very soon, and gained some hints about the blonde mother. Sagesse had an idea about asking Randolph Carter to see into Metzengerstein's dreams, but they would have to wait for nightfall to contact him again. While questioning Metzengerstein, Caleb was attacked by snipers, who turned out to have a much larger attack force with them, including the immortal Solomon Kane, an old nemesis of the group. As the attackers concentrated their fire on him and nearly killed him, a group of strangers dressed in homemade tuxedo-like outfits emerged from the sewer and provided enough cover fire for the group to escape with them. In their underground lair, the cult revealed themselves as "Calebites" who worshiped the escape artist because of religious signs he had planted throughout history. They believed his powers to be divine and sought his guidance and leadership, much to his delight. They knew that a group called Die Wächtern was trying to assassinate Caleb and had infiltrated it to prevent this, and they found a possible solution in the qabal's by-laws: A representative of Caleb could petition the qabal for a waiver on account of Caleb using his powers for good, but if the petition was accepted, they would have to attend a hearing and call witnesses attesting to Caleb's morality. Sagesse departed to file this petition.

in attendance:
Aaron Shurtleff as Gao
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan

The Mediator Between Head and Hands

game session #213
played on September 27, 2017

With Sagesse ill, Elise went in her place. She found Die Wächtern's headquarters, a fortified stone tower in the center of Berlin, overlooking the city ominously. Elise met a bureaucrat who helped her fill out paperwork for a waiver, which was accepted and a trial was scheduled to occur in 72 hours. Elise was also met inside by old enemy Liesel Schreiner, nine months pregnant, who insisted that Caleb would die and the trial would be pointless. The group brainstormed and came up with a list of witnesses who could testify that Caleb (not the group) had helped them: A fisherman to whom Caleb had given money, a street urchin to whom Caleb had shown kindness, a socialite to whom Caleb had given a blood transfusion, a farmer whose life Caleb had saved, and more. With the help of Nemo's Nautilus, the group hurried around the world, collecting these witnesses and hoping that they would be enough.

in attendance:
Aaron Shurtleff as Gao
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc

earned points:
Caleb for suggesting Wilhelmina Jacobson
Elise for working out a hearing with Die Wächtern
Gao for suggesting Mirabella Meeker

Trial of the Turn of the Century

game session #214
played on October 4, 2017

The group convened in Die Wächtern's fortress, bringing their witnesses into a courtroom where Die Wächtern assigned a judge to preside over the hearing. Die Wächtern's representative took turns with Caleb bringing witnesses. Besides the witnesses who Caleb called, who gradually and inadvertently assembled a picture of Elise being a flying thief, Die Wächtern summoned numerous people who Caleb hadn't seen in a long time: Professional rival Mandrake, hostile reporter Chris Collins, a pair of investigators who Caleb compelled to "go to China," Swiss socialite Otto Hunziker, and more. They described Caleb as a jerk and a cheater and insinuated more, but Caleb counter-argued against each one, with suggestions from the rest of the party.

in attendance:
Aaron Shurtleff as Gao
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Marmaduke

earned points:
Caleb for successfully countering most accusations

The Shoemaker

game session #215
played on March 7, 2018

While the judge deliberated, Gao discovered that the anti-Caleb faction in the courtroom was planning to attack him after the verdict was read. They debated at length the ethics of a pre-emptive strike and other strategies, eventually deciding to let the verdict be read first. The judge could not decide, and offered to use "the Artifact," Die Wächtern's most prized object, an enchanted monocle which could reveal Caleb's true nature to everyone in the world. After the group failed at a ruse, Caleb agreed to try it, and they discovered that he was the so-called "Wandering Jew" of legend, cursed to walk the Earth in lifetime after lifetime, never finding peace. The judge agreed to let him and the group go free, but Liesel Schreiner demanded Caleb's death, having decided that if Caleb took the place of her child at birth, it would prevent the Anti-Christ from being born. The group convinced her to do an exorcism instead, and it proved successful. The group helped the witnesses return home, and Rocambole offered to take them to visit Deke Bishop in Paris, but first, they wanted to say goodbye to the Calebites. They found the cultists dying of poison, having learned that Caleb's true nature was not a religious savior, and that he had faked his holy nature in history. Through good fortune, the group was barely able to revive them, and get them medical care. Caleb urged them to move on and stop worshipping him.

in attendance:
Aaron Shurtleff as Gao
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Marmaduke (last appearance)
