Endgame

game session #230
played on August 22, 2018

To heal from the spells of Oliver Haddo, the group sought psychic healer Josephine Balsamo in London. There, they read a newspaper article about Cthulhu destroying Tokyo and heading toward Hong Kong. A thief named Jimmie Dale told Deke about finding the wallet of the missing Mycroft Holmes in a locked empty apartment, where a neighbor described lights in the sky on the night that Mycroft vanished. Gant suspected alien abduction, and suggested that the group head out to an open field; they settled on Stonehenge. After procuring transportation, they were attacked at the monument by a pair of three-legged machines, each three stories tall, that set the forest and monument on fire with blasts of light. The group worked together to take down the machines and eliminate them through a portal. A magic pigeon arrived with a message for Deke that Paris was under attack. They found the city on fire, with more three-legged machines and flying airships laying waste to the burning ruins, as metal men and mi-go attacked individuals on the street. Millions of people were panicking and the city was utter chaos. Deke found thief Irma Vep and sent her to the Manor, while Gant tackled one of the metal men, who called him "My Lord Harrington."

Across the Gulf of Space

game session #231
played on August 29, 2018

The group continued battling the attackers destroying Paris, having varying success and learning that the machines were remote-controlled. Gant learned that the automatons had come from Mars (which they called "Barsoom"), and that his mother Coraline was there. The group learned that fifteen other major cities around Earth were being attacked simultaneously, and that the attackers' plan after this was to fan out to smaller cities and the countryside, destroying resistance and enslaving humanity in the name of Matai Shang. The group discussed ways to get to Mars. Caleb talked to filmmaker Georges Méliès, who knew of some Americans who built a real cannon to travel into space like he had portrayed in his movie. They tracked this group to Grover's Mill, a forested area in New Jersey, and convinced them to fire their bullet-shaped capsule at Mars with a door to the Manor inside. While waiting the twelve hours necessary for that trip, Sagesse went to Alexandria and used the hall of mirrors to learn that her parents and nephew, as well as Mycroft Holmes and Holgrave, were still alive, but her twin brother Jacques had been killed in Paris. The worldwide death toll so far was now in the millions.

People of Earth

game session #232
played on September 12, 2018

The group explored the cratered Martian surface and determined that the air was breathable. They found a dried-up canal, and followed it to a nearly empty city where a few bizarre creatures spoke unfamiliar languages. One alien recognized Gao's La Lumiére ring. Inside a building, they found humans mindlessly doing chores, and a skinless alien performing an operation. In a locked dark cell, they found an old friend: C. Auguste Dupin, the detective who had first introduced them to La Lumiére a year earlier, who had been reduced to a brain in a jar and taken away by mi-go back in Dunwich. He thanked them for the rescue and explained that he was a hormad, a machine body covered with lifelike flesh (like the assassin who killed Vic Breslin), and that his real brain was implanted in it by scientist Ras Thavas. He said the mastermind Matai Shang was obsessed with saving his Martian people from their dying planet by conquering Earth to make a new home for them. Hartdegen realized that the reddish hellscape he had explored 9000 years in Earth's future was caused not by Imhotep but by Shang's takeover. Dupin explained that Shang partnered with Earthlings like Frank Reade and Sarah Winchester, and others had used stolen Martian tech to make the Vault under Paris. Shang used teleportation technology to install a secret army on Earth that would attack on his command. To stop him, the group would have to find the person he feared most: Army officer John Carter, who had escaped Shang's custody and was hiding somewhere on the planet.
