Novus Ordo Seclorum

game session #5
played on August 24, 2009

Arriving in Philadelphia, the group met their contact Thaddeus Jackson at the City Tavern, an old restaurant that had once served the Founding Fathers. Jackson gave them an assignment: Investigate the Hellfire Club, a debauched private club for rich and powerful men, which had recently begun dabbling in arcane magic and the Red Death. La Lumière had tried to infiltrate the club themselves, losing touch with their agent Liesel Schreiner in the process. Alone, Lawrence observed the windowless building called Monk Hall where the club operated, but was driven away by a police officer and a giant humpbacked guard. After staying in hotel rooms provided by Jackson, the group traveled alone the next morning. Alexandria and Celio comforted a madame who told them she had helped a banker named Frank Cowperwood acquire the "services" of a genuine virgin for a party; the madame begged them to find the girl, Sophie. Elise learned that the Founding Fathers had once belonged to the Hellfire Club after it came to the Colonies 130 years earlier. Aidan was promoted to Paladin and instructed to find Oliver Haddo, a cult leader who practiced a new religion called Thelema that rejected God and practiced magic, and put him out of commission. John made contact with a professor knowledgeable about the occult. Katerina got a delivery job in a bakery that catered parties at the Hellfire Club. Lawrence found the dead owner of a liquor store that delivered to the Hellfire Club and took the store deed. Later, working together, the group decoded the password to the Hellfire Club door that the madame had been given, written on the back of a dollar bill: "Novus ordo seclorum." (more detail)

Cells

game session #6
played on August 31, 2009

The group split up at the hotel. Doing research, Elise and John discovered that the City Tavern had been rebuilt after a fire, and earned suspicions of a city employee after asking about Monk Hall. Celio got a job waiting tables at the City Tavern, learned of the rebuilding, and talked a longtime customer into showing him the entrance underground behind the restaurant. Alexandria and Lawrence returned to Schmidt Liquors, but were found by a cop. At first he believed Alexandria's story about her "missing uncle" who owned the place, but suddenly became suspicious and detained them both in a jail cell at the police station while other officers could investigate the scene more thoroughly. Aidan wandered to Monk Hall and talked his way into "seeing the owner" with a story about buying the building, but the hulking guard named Devil-Bug led him to a stairwell down and he was knocked unconscious on the stairs. He awoke in the dark, locked in a jail cell, forced to use his concealed pistol to shoot his way out. He freed a teenaged girl named Sophie from another cell and led her through an opening in the floor to an underground tunnel. Katerina returned to her job at Coffin Bakery, at first agreeing to help preach to the wayward Blackburn Coffin, but later impressing him by being open to carousing at a party that night with a charismatic man called Oliver Haddo. Before Blackburn could take her inside Monk Hall, he was shot by a sniper who warned Katerina she would be in danger if she entered the building. Away from Monk Hall, the sniper deduced that Katerina was sent by La Lumière, and said that she was a former agent named Liesel Schreiner. She worked with another group now that was prepared to use violent force to exterminate the Hellfire Club, and Katerina agreed to talk about working together. (more detail)

Stalemate

game session #7
played on September 7, 2009

Aidan fled Monk Hall with the teenaged captive he had freed, Sophie. When a cultist named Harter Gill tried to recapture them, Aidan talked him into trying the Catholic Church and helping them escape. They met Katerina, who had just agreed to meet assassin Liesel Schreiner later that night at the hotel. Elsewhere, Thaddeus Jackson warned Elise and John that two members of their group had been detained and would soon be arrested with murder. They fetched Celio from his restaurant job and met the others at the police station, where Alexandria pleaded Lawrence's innocence from the jail window. Aidan talked his way into the police station and vouched for their presence at a sermon that afternoon, getting them freed. The group returned Sophie home safely and left Gill in the custody of the church. At the hotel, they found their rooms ransacked and cult leader Oliver Haddo waiting for them with a game to play: Beat him at chess and he would leave town, but lose and they would have to leave at dawn. They negotiated the exact terms and finally accepted, but a difficult game swung in Haddo's favor as he out-strategized them. After he won, Aidan shot him in the chest and forced him to flee by vanishing, an action roundly condemned by the group, who believed they had now failed in their mission and would be rejected for membership in La Lumière. Liesel arrived and began talking about ways to attack the Hellfire Club, and the group reluctantly plotted with her, believing Aidan had left them no choice. (more detail)
