Family Plot

game session #79
played on October 31, 2011

Gao awoke alone in the Manor, and fell victim to an ice elemental temporarily stored there by the group. They found her next to a burning windmill that Melchitt had apparently torched in order to warm her up. Thomas Carnacki was glad to see Gao revived, and spent time catching her up to speed on the group's adventures while she was comatose. In the morning, Carnacki informed the group that they had been hired by a wealthy man in London to travel to Surrey county to investigate a haunted house called Bly, where the man's unwanted niece and nephew were being raised by a governess and housekeeper. Gant recognized the location as the area where he had grown up. Checking in on his mother, they found her raving about "the devil coming to collect his due" and how "the cousin needs your help," and transferred her to a secluded room in the Manor for safe-keeping. Lyon suffered hallucinations brought on by Gao's faerie "friend" Exra. Hiring a carriage to take them from London to Surrey, the group saw the British countryside, and Gant talked them into a detour to his hometown of Weybridge to see cousins who inherited the family farm. He discovered that his destitute cousin Rumjaw was struggling to repopulate the family, as they were the only Harringtons left. Paying a visit to the family gravesite, they learned that the spirit of Gant's father Roy was absent from his grave, a very strange occurrence. (more detail)

Ambuscade

game session #80
played on November 14, 2011

As Gant climbed into the carriage to leave his family farm, it exploded, sending the group scrambling to defend themselves against another visit from old nemesis Solomon Kane. Their attacks seemed not to phase him, until Fang disarmed him and mauled him to death before Elise could interrogate him as to the cause. With Gant's shocked cousins, they buried their friend in the family cemetery on the edge of the farm, and Caleb delivered a short eulogy. Forced to walk into town to hire another carriage, they arrived late in the day at the House of Bly: A three-story brick country house with the sound of children playing nearby. The mean old housekeeper Mrs. Grose glared at them and nearly kept them out, until younger governess Grace Jessel greeted them as an enthusiastic fan of "the Incredible Caleb." The group encountered a shy little girl nicknamed "Tiny" while waiting for dinner, but when questioning the family about it, the two real children Flora and Miles seized up. The group deduced that Tiny must have been a ghost. Flora described once seeing an eyeless, antlered man in the woods riding a massive steed, and Elise recognized Herne the Hunter from British folklore. When they heard footsteps and saw doors re-open after being closed, the group suspected that things were not right at the house, but settled in for a night as guests. (more detail)

Hic Sunt Dracones

game session #81
played on November 21, 2011

Exploring the house, the group found a mirror that started aging Caleb into an old man and Lyon into a teenager, and that gave Gao a crushing sensation in her chest when she lifted it. Elise tried to return to the guest room she shared with Gao but found it sealed and impenetrable; a symbol on the door (three verical lines connected through the middle by one horizontal line, all in a circle) indicated that some kind of spell was in effect. In the kitchen, they found a live rabbit from the stew they had just eaten and a full bottle of wine that they had already drunk, but also moldy vegetables and bread. Elise speculated that some things in the house were moving backwards in time while others moved forwards. Curious about her own strange, black-attired reflection in the mirror, Gao entered Flora's bedroom and found herself in the Chicago apartment of former teammate Fayt Leigngod, who was glad but confused to see her. He said that he had relocated there to find his mother, but the group decided not to help him and resumed their search. Heading through the empty Manor to New York, they found no one on the darkened streets, and began wondering if they were stuck in a shared dream. They returned to the House of Bly, where, in the bedroom of mean old housekeeper Mrs. Grose, they found the insignia of their old nemeses the Fellowship of the Crimson Dawn, and realized that Mrs. Grose was Clementine, one of the Fellowship's spellcasters. Under her bed, they found a journal detailing the group's own complete adventures, filling in new text magically (the last paragraph described finding and reading this very journal). (more detail)

Oneirocritica

game session #82
played on December 5, 2011

Breaking open mirrors in the house, Lyon discovered documents related to Gao's past, causing speculation that this shared dream seemed to be all about her. After finding "The girl's name is Enid!" on another document, Elise compelled Melchitt to confirm that it was Gao's real first name. The ghost of little Tiny returned, and said that her nickname was short for "Clementine" -- she was a past projection of Clementine Grose, much like the mean old Mrs. Grose was a future projection. Tiny said that she was scared of a "moon-faced" creature with craters for eyes and mouth, who made sucking sounds. The group learned that the sealed doorway to Gao's guest room could only be opened when the cryptic puzzle on the seal was solved. Various possibilities were discussed, but the group kept coming back to ƎE, suggesting that Enid needed to be reversed. Testing out documents in a mirror, Lyon tried the note that revealed Gao's name and saw, "!hconE si eman s'yob ehT" When Elise used the phrase "Enid, Enoch" to open the door, it worked, producing a key to a locked room downstairs. There, they found themselves passed out on tables, with a succubus sucking a seemingly endless supply of the Red Death from an unconscious Gao while sitting on her chest. Caleb killed the creature with his sword and woke up Gao, ending the dream. They realized that they had been unconscious for a week, and the dream hadn't reflected reality: Details about the house were different, and Gant had quit the group before Solomon Kane's ambush, meaning that he had survived.
