Crazy Train

game session #132
played on August 27, 2013

In London, the group encountered old business partner Thomas Carnacki, who queried them about their travels, particularly to the observatory in Flagstaff. When they returned to the room where Carnacki had been seated, they found his head deflated and his body propped up, evidence that an alien called a mi-go had possessed his dead body to gather information. The group met with Mycroft Holmes, who induced Vic and Deke into La Lumière and briefly explained the organization's history and goals. After discussing a few open cases, he had them decipher a message taken from the Brotherhood of Alchemae, a rival qabal of scientists who study the Red Death. It said that Thomas Edison was to demonstrate a new invention in Vancouver, which Holmes ordered the group to investigate. Aboard a two-day train ride, they began experiencing strange visions of a hospital and prison, and encountered snobby rich passengers.

Amanda Ross Bryant as Vic Breslin
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:

Vic for defusing the confrontation between Deke and the snobby stranger

Alternating Currents

game session #133
played on September 10, 2013

The group separately explored the train's entertainment and social options while strange hallucinations of a mental hospital continued, convincing Elise that they were actually locked in one, especially when a "Dr. Caligari" was mentioned. Sagesse's meek assistant Gilbert said he was warned that she would not make it to Vancouver if she continued on the trip, by the same snob who had insulted Deke at dinner. The group rummaged through his room and found electrical traps to shock intruders, and a note with their names on it along with a stranger's, crossed out. When Deke forced the train to stop by faking a fire, he eventually found the rich man in the sole freight car, wearing gloves with a metal apparatus and repeating his warning to leave Mr. Edison alone. When Vic tried to tackle him, Vic experienced a shock and collapsed. Elise poured water on the man and dropped him to the ground, where she sliced open his arm and found metal gears inside. When they checked Vic, they found him without a pulse.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Vic Breslin (last appearance)
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc

Total Party Kill

game session #134
played on October 1, 2013

On another corpse, the group found a note from La Lumière instructing the man to follow and protect them, and warning that one of them was not who they claimed to be. Unable to revive Vic, the group tearfully said goodbye to his spirit, but from his perspective, he still seemed to be locked in the sanitarium, which they learned was called the Vancouver Institute for Mental Health. In the night, they shared a dream of being locked in there with Vic, where Deke plotted an escape from his straightjacket and discovered that Dr. Caligari conducted forbidden experiments in the basement, and Elise talked to a patient named Edgar Cayce who warned that the "girlboy" (Gao) would soon help to destroy the world by raising Atlantis, or so he had foreseen in visions. Former allies Aidan Kane and "Count Renval" were also apparently patients at the asylum. The group awakened, Sagesse still troubled by dreams about vampires, and had a brief rude run-in with Caleb's rival, Mandrake the magician. After lying their way beyond the passport checkpoint, they disembarked in Vancouver, where they entered a local eatery and Deke began making business arrangements with gold prospectors heading up to the Klondike territory. A strange, mute Inuit man named Nannuraluk made fast friends with Elise and attached himself to the group, much to Deke's chagrin.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk (first appearance)
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:
Deke for focusing on the asylum basement
Nann for distracting asylum guards (carryover from Vic Breslin)

Room Service

game session #135
played on October 15, 2013

With gestures alone, Nannuraluk explained that his facial scars were the result of a bear attack. He suffered bigotry from the locals. Caleb spotted a newspaper article about missing body parts from cadavers in the mortuary. The group changed into fine attire and entered a posh new hotel just built for nouveau riche prospectors from the Klondike gold rush, where they learned that Edison's presentation would begin that night and he was staying in the top-floor penthouse. Breaking into that room, they found Marie Curie a prisoner of an electrical device and freed her, keeping her sedated and taking her for medical care and debriefing in London, then searched the room to turn up blueprints for a "minerological transconfiguration device" and correspondence with Victor Frankenstein. They also awakened a dormant guard, a metal man that operated on steam power, and defeated him in a gun battle. Their revived enemy from the train (Vic's killer) emerged into the room just as they fled to the Manor.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:
Caleb for providing disguises

Aftershocks

game session #136
played on October 29, 2013

Nannuraluk explored the Manor but didn't fully grasp its magical nature. Deke explored a random door and emerged in France, where he found a camera hidden in a clock and triggered an alarm before fleeing. Caleb set about repairing the robot he'd taken from Edison's penthouse and converting it into a butler, and found "Reade Industries" written on a plate inside it. He also played a recording that the robot had made of a conversation about being replaced by a human-looking automaton given as a gift from a benefactor plotting a new world order with high technology. Deke furthered his business dealings with two gold prospectors, who revealed the location of a cache of gold north of town they wanted to mine. Nannuraluk was met by the ghost of Vic Breslin, who seemed to want to lure him to an insane asylum, but Elise refused to enter that building, fearing danger. In the city library, they met Edward Weston, a vile researcher studying the occult, and talked him out of attending Edison's presentation that evening as he had planned to do.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:
none

Polymorphic Recursion

game session #137
played on November 12, 2013

While delivering Marie Curie into medical treatment in London, Sagesse learned that the physicist was La Lumière's plant inside the Brotherhood of Alchemae, who had first provided notice of Edison's speech and who likely had been forced into revealing the group's travel plans. In Vancouver, the reunited group decided to enter the sanitarium after all, and talked their way past guards and the strange patient Edgar, who spoke of a dream about a man in blue assaulting a man in red and stealing his technology. In the basement of the facility, they were ambushed by Dr. Caligari, who mistook them for bounty hunters delivering the clone of Elise LeBlanc that he had contracted for. Upon the group's very beginning on New Years Eve in Baltimore, Roderick Usher had cloned his seven guests out of the Red Death itself, and shipped them to Caligari, but a train crash in Falls Run temporarily halted his work. Intending to kill this group for delivering him the useless original Elise by mistake, Caligari set his device to overdrive, but a badly timed gunshot from Deke caused an energy reaction: This woman traveling with them was in fact the clone of Elise, and her power was channeled into the other people, forever making them more powerful. While Elise cried at the revelation, Deke and Caleb chased after the fleeing Dr. Caligari in vain, and Sagesse and Nannuraluk explored the hall of horrors in the basement, finding the corpse of another clone. They took psychic Edgar Cayce back to the Manor.

Horror Vacui

game session #138
played on December 17, 2013

The group answered a ringing sound upstairs. The futuristic tablet that they had taken from their attacker on the train had come to life, and a man named Matai Shang threatened them from the other side, warning them to bury the tablet and forget the conversation. Wrapped all in blue, Shang deduced that they were working for the red-robed Holgrave, the alien who had teleported them around the world for months. When they mocked Shang and turned off the tablet, they suddenly found themselves adrift in Earth's orbit. Deke and Sagesse passed out quickly and suffered oxygen deprivation, while Nannuraluk panicked and temporarily transformed into a polar bear. Working together, Elise and Caleb created a door to the Manor and pushed everyone through it, losing some of their belongings in the process. Once the group gathered their composure, they snuck into the waiting room for Thomas Edison's presentation, where they made small talk with several eccentric scientists, and Caleb discovered a severed hand moving by itself on a shelf.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

Fearless and Therefore Powerful

game session #139
played on January 7, 2014

Edison revealed his invention: An "Anti-Alchemist" that pulled gold through the air and synthesized it into any form that he wished. Before Edison could finish, Deke sensed a trap and opened fire, killing Edison and revealing that he was an android. The room was suddenly burst into by a very angry Frankenstein, who had reassembled his body from stolen cadaver parts, with two extra arms. He severely wounded Sagesse and Caleb in the ensuing battle, while Nannuraluk transformed into a polar bear and Deke tried various magical ammunition. Eventually the group destroyed Frankenstein for the second time, and talked their way out of a police confrontation, but discovered that one of the scientists had absconded with Edison's invention and possibly Frankenstein's now-missing head. Nannuraluk realized that the hill that Edison planned to strip of its gold veins was home to his village, so he persuaded the group to travel there for four days through the snow. Before they left, Deke found the prospectors who had hired him and tricked them into giving up some of their supplies, intending to leave the two men behind.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:
Deke for defeating Frankenstein

Rush

game session #140
played on January 20, 2014

In the morning, the group purchased ample supplies for the four-day hike until their money ran out, then forced the prospectors to hand over the rest of their gear. Exposure, hypothermia, and a broken (and quickly healed) wrist tormented the group over the first two days. They passed the remains of the two prospectors, who had died without their equipment. A howling voice on the wind called Rose's name, and she became increasingly anxious to find its source, running into the woods despite the group's attempts to stop her, where a massive unseen presence flew overhead and Rose disappeared, her footprints stretched longer and longer until they became a long streak that ended suddenly. Sleeping in the Manor overnight, Caleb and Elise responded to the screams of Edgar Cayce, who spoke of a nightmare about their old acquaintance being killed. Nannuraluk and Sagesse camped outside overnight, where something about Nann allowed him to befriend a grizzly bear pack and get them to bring him food, and Gilbert's trembling cold convinced them to send him to the Manor to warm up. As they surveyed the remains of a prospector camp recently attacked by bears, a voice on the wind began to howl Sagesse's name.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:
Caleb for devising a way to navigate through the disorientation
Nann for role-playing

Dead of Winter

game session #141
played on January 27, 2014

As Sagesse felt increasingly drawn to the whisper, the group debated whether to stop her or follow her. They tried to pile on to her as the enormous thing flew overhead again, and were tossed about in the snow. She was gone, and the handcuffs to which Caleb had attached himself to her were severed. The ground rumbled and produced an avalanche that nearly buried them, and they speculated that mining with Edison's device had begun. They found a grizzly bear cub orphaned by the avalanche; it followed Nannuraluk and was christened Shesh. Deke was threatened by natives that only he could see. The group found Rose sitting by a fire, fully bundled in her winter clothes, but when they opened her coat, there was only ashes inside. This reminded Elise of folklore about the Wendigo, a wind spirit that drags its victims until they burn alive. After another night passed, Nannuraluk heard his name being called by the wind, and the group succeeded in restraining him just inside the Manor to keep him from approaching it. The wind died down, but when Elise closed the door to the Manor, she saw Sagesse, fully bundled, walking slowly toward her in the snow.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

earned points:

Brave

game session #142
played on February 3, 2014

Sagesse explained that a half-eagle, half-man had poked at her and ultimately rejected her upon tasting her blood, leaving her to wander in the snow. The same Indian ghosts attacked Deke again before being chased off. After more bad dreams and an incident with a bear trap, the group came upon a cabin magically hidden, where they found an occult sorcerer dressed in bird feathers and quickly defeated him. They found Rose clinging to life inside and healed her, then burned the horrid building to the ground, putting an end to the Wendigo and the ghosts with Nannuraluk's prayers. Upon reaching Nannuraluk's village, the town elder, Nanook, described earthquakes threating the community, and sparkling caves beneath the village. While Nannuraluk organized an evacuation and earned the praise of his village, the others climbed underground where they destroyed the Anti-Alchemist and the last of the androids, and witnessed industrialist Frank Reade be banished to orbit for badmouthing his partner, Matai Shang. After Elise stabilized the village, Nanook said that he had seen visions of the world being choked by a poison that only the group could stop, but he warned that the worthy cause would likely be fatal to them.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque
Jeff Coopes as Caleb Lonergan
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc
Wes Bryant as Deke Bishop

Les Bon Temps

game session #143
played on February 24, 2014

This session was run by special guest GM Wes Bryant.

The group heads back from Nann's camp and discover a mysterious box that, once opened, makes all of them switch bodies. Elise is in Nann's body, Nann is in Sagesse's body, Sagesse is in Elise's body, Caleb is in Deke's body, and Deke is in Caleb's body. They discover that the box came from Marie Laveau, who tells them that this was the result of an Orb of Thessala, which she just sold to a mysterious man named Vic. She tells them that he is likely still in town and they start to investigate New Orleans, which is in the middle of Mardi Gras. While searching for Vic, they discover that Caleb has been booked without his knowledge for an escape act and begin to suspect that there is a double of Caleb walking around. Once they arrive at the St. Charles Hotel, they discover that they have been expected, being booked into a penthouse suite and offered a fancy dinner by the mayor's office. Discovering that the man who booked the show signed as Vic Breslin and made plans from Vancouver, they are certain that they are walking into a trap. They investigate the mayor, but all seems legitimate and they meet an intern named Gilbert (silent t) that shows them around town. When they get back to the hotel, they order room service and discover a note telling them "If you want your stone and bodies back, then we will need to meet. I will contact you with instructions," along with a box filled with bees. Once they start to head to dinner, they bump into Mortimer Toombs and have an epiphany that with the body switch, perhaps Caleb Lonergan is not the only target. (more detail)

Ghost in the Graveyard

game session #144
played on March 4, 2014

This session was run by special guest GM Wes Bryant.

Mortimer Toombs walked into a closet, where the group found his slimy remains with evidence that a mi-go had been in control of his body. Suspicious of the extra-spicy food, they arranged to meet the chef, who turned out to be the gnome Tabasco from the Crimson Castle, a dimension that they had recently and barely escaped from; they convinced him to move into the Manor. They also learned that a bartender named "Vic" had been spying on them, but he fled before they could talk to him; they discovered his backpack with notes about them. After sleeping overnight, they very cautiously made plans to perform Caleb's stunt in the morning; Deke (in Caleb's body) was especially apprehensive about the possibility of a death trap. Finally, the stunt began, and flying beasts attacked, nearly disrupting the stunt and dispersing the crowd. While the stunt concluded, the group gave chase to a man on a rooftop, who dropped a note mentioning his plans to be in the graveyard that night. While Deke/Caleb used magic to pretend to be a statue hiding in plain sight, the group met their attacker, eventually revealed to be Vic's brother Henry Breslin, using flying apes from Oz and electric armor from Reade Industries to get revenge on the group for letting his brother die, especially Deke who he believed to be the cause of Vic's death. The group defeated Henry but had to dissuade Deke from killing him to prevent further vengeance; they allowed him to leave on his word that he would leave them alone forever. Mortimer Toombs appeared in the graveyard, this time seeming to be an android like they had encountered on the train to Vancouver, and revealed that a first strike against the group by their enemies was coming up.

in attendance:
Amanda Ross Bryant as Nannuraluk as Sagesse la Roque
Evie Totty as Sagesse la Roque as Elise LeBlanc
Kelly Hardie as Elise LeBlanc as Nannuraluk
