The Secret Self

game session #34
played on April 19, 2010

In Washington, Fayt offered to let the group stay at his apartment. He drew a chalk circle on the floor that his mother taught him would prevent nightmares, but when he awoke screaming from a horrific dream about ripping off his skin, Elise recognized it as a supernatural containment circle. At the Smithsonian museum, the group found Excalibur missing, and the curator insisted that he had already told them the day before that it was stolen, shortly after it had disappeared. The local contact for La Lumière told them via a new device called a telephone to investigate a robbery at the White House. Fayt's boss at the US Marshal Service told him to work closely with the group in this matter, and that the public had not yet learned that the Declaration of Independence had also been taken. Lawrence was told that he had been in a bar the day before and didn't remember it. Alexandria lost track of two women she saw following the others. Fayt confronted his mother Ursula at the church where she worked, and she told him that his exposure to supernatural power (which she recognized coming from Elise) was exposing his true nature, something that she had tried to keep from him for thirty years, but she couldn't bring herself to speak its name.

In the Course of Human Events

game session #35
played on April 26, 2010

The same two women who had followed the group for the last few days confronted Fayt in the church with his mother, trying to provoke him into a battle, but she intervened and he fled with the group. Trying their luck at the White House, they learned of a gala event for European dignitaries, and Lawrence's false identity of Count Renval (with a forged invitation) got them inside. Alexandria learned from her old contact, presidential secretary George Cortelyou, that the robbery had taken place four nights earlier and certain locals hired for the canceled party that night were involved. John Sheppard determined that former colleague Celio Parisi was the thief. Gao was taunted by other children, but the spectre of Abraham Lincoln comforted her and she decided to clean herself up for good. Outside, the two women summoned hellhounds to provoke Fayt and Elise into a battle. Fayt transformed into a ten-foot winged demon, while the rest of the group joined the battle, driving the women into fleeing and leaving a ring behind. Lawrence discovered that his enchanted sword was gone.

Possessions

game session #36
played on May 10, 2010

John object-read the silver ring, and saw the two sorceresses abducting Ursula Leigngod. Fayt, John, and Elise went to the church looking for her, finding the beginning of a letter in which she mentioned the name Marchosias, but John's increasingly destructive clumsiness caused him to head back to Fayt's apartment in despair. He thought back on the night's events and realized that someone at the White House had mentioned that it was Wednesday, when he and everyone else thought it was only Tuesday. Meanwhile, Alexandria and Lawrence scoured bars looking for clues to his sword's whereabouts. In the La Lumière contact's apartment, the voice on the telephone asked if anything else was missing, and they realized that all of their valuable items were gone. When the group reunited at Fayt's apartment, they met the two women with parasols inside, who told Fayt that his father wanted to see him now. The group followed them to an arena compound in another dimension, where the Fellowship of the Crimson Dawn revealed itself: Bored socialites who practiced the occult for fun and power. Their leader was Lemuel Caution, Fayt's boss and their La Lumière contact. Caution had engineered Fayt's work with the group to initiate his transformation, and claimed ownership of the demon that Fayt really was. During the ensuing battle, Lawrence rescued Ursula, while Alexandria and Elise convinced the crowd to flee. John found a diary belonging to one of the women, revealing how to create portals in doorways, and Elise took it to learn more. With Lemuel badly beaten up, one of the women dead, and the crowd dispersed, Elise restored the portal back to Fayt's apartment.

Pentimento

game session #37
played on May 17, 2010

In the morning, the group broke into Lemuel Caution's apartment, across the street from where he had called them. They found his notes about Fayt's life, and an unusual map of the world. Elise figured out how to create her own pocket dimension from the dead sorceress's journal, and led the group into a private Manor floating in space. After getting Celio Parisi's address from the telephone operator, the group traveled to it: Trilby Performances, a company that rented musicians for hire at private events. A teenaged woman arranged for them to talk to the manager, but when they entered, they found themselves back in Fayt's apartment. They headed back, but first they returned to the bar they had visited before, and learned more about the hypnotist Anna Mesmer who sometimes performed there. While Fayt and Alexandria arranged for Trilby's manager to come over to his apartment and headed there to wait for him, Lawrence pressed his way into the back of the building and was sent back out with a gun to kill Elise. She overcame him and traveled back to the Manor, then opened a portal to Fayt's apartment to reunite the group. While they busied themselves with Lawrence, Fayt greeted a brief visitor in his apartment, changed into his demon form, and attacked the group in the Manor. He was dragged into a protection circle, while Lawrence was thrown onto his head and seriously injured.

At the Wrong Time, in the Wrong Place

game session #38
played on May 24, 2010

When Lawrence awoke, he was convinced that he was Swedish immigrant "Ben Freemont" and resisted the group's efforts to convince him otherwise. Fayt continued threatening the group and had to stay contained. Believing that hypnotist Anna Mesmer was behind their memory loss, the group observed her evening show. When Gao volunteered to go on stage, she helped the child begin to deal with lingering issues over the loss of her parents. Convinced that Mesmer was no threat, the group approached her after the show for help, and learned that a master hypnotist and thief named Svengali was behind the robberies; he was able to press his will onto anyone who heard him speak. After Mesmer restored Lawrence and convinced Fayt that he was an ordinary human, the group returned to Svengali's warehouse with their ears plugged, and had no trouble defeating him in battle. Lawrence nearly murdered him with a chain, but instead cut out his tongue and delivered him to the police. Celio thanked the group for freeing him from Svengali's influence. The group found their belongings along with a burned padlock from the House of the Seven Gables in Salem, their next destination.
