Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
This is a fun movie, billed as a drama but, to me at least, it more closely resembles a low-key comedy. Chris Messina has the funniest scene with a creatively obscene rant suggesting that his character could have become a drill instructor in another life. The movie lets its main character off the hook too easily for being a compulsive gambler who bets everyone else's livelihood on a long shot, but it's so entertaining along the way that you forgive it. There are too many 80s pop-culture references, especially on the overstuffed soundtrack (does every scene change require a Top 40 hit from 1984?), but I appreciated the acknowledgements of the sneaker business's dark sides sprinkled throughout the film.
