Erik Bates: “It was ok.”

Fun, but predictable. I had the antagonist pegged from the start and the rest of the film was just me sitting there in agony waiting for the reveal to happen.

Scott Hardie: Please tell me there's a flashback to when Foxx's character first asked out Diaz's character and it was in a locker room.

Netflix tends to copy what its competitors do, so I guess they saw Mark Wahlberg's The Family Plan on Apple TV+ and decided to make their own version? The parents-are-secretly-spies trope has been around for a long time, but it has turned up an unusually high amount lately, from the True Lies TV remake to the ongoing Spy Kids film series to The Americans to Black Widow. It's such a Cold War premise, and so the fact that it's (mostly) turning up in comedies must be a sign of times. But still, Back in Action had to do a lot to feel fresh amidst so many similar titles, and it doesn't seem to have pulled it off. − January 25, 2025 • more by Scott
