Inside Out 2
Scott Hardie: “It was ok.”
This grossed a fortune at the box office, which doesn't bode well for Disney turning into even more of a sequel factory. But at least I can agree with its reputation for being an above-average sequel. The new emotions, most of all the very well realized Anxiety, are just the kind of growth that the movie needed to sustain another story. I really liked the culmination of Anxiety's reign of control; what a clever way to depict how that feels. The literalizing of certain mind-related phrases ("brain storm" depicted as an actual windy rainstorm, for instance) gets tiresome as joke fodder, but sometimes the concepts connect: Ron Funches has a very funny scene as a long-forgotten cartoon character, for instance. This movie inevitably feels inessential as a retread of familiar material, but it has a few good ideas.
