The Boy and the Heron
Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
It's a Hayao Miyazaki film. Were you expecting it to suck? As he nearly always does, the master creates another richly detailed and gracefully animated blend of mundanity and fantasy, You enjoy it more if you know how it came about (the first half is based on his own childhood; the second is a symbolic representation of his career), but none of that is necessary; this could be your introduction to Miyazaki and you'd still be entranced. I was spellbound from the first frame to the last, and I assume that nearly everyone else will be, too. I hope that Miyazaki will create more films, but if this does become his last major work, it's a fine way to seal his legacy of excellence.
