The Cat Returns
2002
Young Haru rescues a cat from being run over, but soon learns it's no ordinary feline; it happens to be the Prince of the Cats. And in recognition of Haru for saving his life, the Prince brings her to the Kingdom of Cats -- to be his bride! Can Haru's feline friends hatch a plan to rescue her from this unusual fate? Hiroyuki Morita directs this fantastical anime feature with the vocal talents of Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes and Peter Boyle.

Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

It may have been produced by Studio Ghibli and animated with their usual attention to detail, but this isn't a Hiyao Miyazaki film, for better and worse. It tells a lightweight story lacking the emotional punch of Miyazaki's productions, but it has a silly, carefree spirit with real charm. Go in expecting the usual tropes of children's movies (including an endless series of farewells) and you might find yourself grinning at the film's goofiness.
