The Iron Giant
Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
I have no idea what I would have thought of this in 1999, but finally seeing it a quarter-century later, I find its reputation for excellence to be justified. It's not just well-animated and lovingly made, never once betraying its small budget or rushed production timeline. It's also a very effective vessel for a message about non-violence and self-determination, important subjects not covered often enough in children's entertainment. If the villain feels a little too inexplicably hellbent on war, well, aren't we all collectively as a species that way? I liked its little flashes of personality in the early going and the offbeat characterization in the supporting roles, but the movie really kicks into high gear in its final act, when its main themes are at last out in the open and it can address them explicitly. What a special movie this turned out to be.
