Scott Hardie: Really! I'm surprised. I completely ignored this movie because I assumed that it had little to offer as yet another retread of the same old IP. This material has been around long enough to have developed several problems in a modern context -- Johnny Depp's spousal abuse retroactively ruined the last version, and Roald Dahl's racism is so embodied by the Oompa-Loompas that they should be dropped altogether -- so I wasn't eager to find out whether this film was worth seeing.
