There's a new study that indicates that country music fans vote conservative, pop music fans vote liberal, and heavy metal fans are politically moderate. The first conclusion is kind of obvious, but the others are news to me.

I listen to indie rock more than anything else. I consider myself near left, politically... which probably makes me more conservative than a typical young, hipster, iPad-surfing, Starbucks-drinking, Obama-loving indie rock fan.

I also listen to metal sometimes, but I've always felt out of step with other metal fans. They strike me as inclined towards smaller government, American exceptionalism, military hawkishness, and the death penalty, none of them associated with the left. If Ted Nugent ever runs for office, Dave Mustaine could be his running mate.

What musical genre do you listen to most? Do you think it has any correlation to your political inclination?

I mainly listen to hard rock, classic rock and some heavy metal. You all know my political leanings so no reason to go over them again.

I am the oldies type and country type not much into the Heavy Metal.

When Ice-T joined the cast of Special Victims Unit, I wondered if they were going to sneak in an oblique reference to his notorious rap "Cop Killer" and the political controversy that followed it.

At one point, the detective characters are revealing details of their personal lives. One raises an eyebrow at Ice-T and asks, "I'm sure you have many secrets?" He scowls and says, "Yeah. I'm a Republican."
