I've been playing Hollywood Stock Exchange off and on since the late 1990s, building up a $1.1 billion portfolio with over 500 securities held. In the world of silly little online games like Funeratic offers, it's not a small accomplishment.
And I almost lost it all this week. The site must have suffered some kind of hacking, because they reset everyone's passwords and provided instructons for getting your new password by email. The problem is, I haven't changed my email address on there since the late 1990s when I joined! I've gone through so many domains and hosts since then that I didn't even know what address it was: It might have been my website's domain, or it might have been my college email address, or it might have been some Hotmail or Yahoo address I created and forgot about. I don't think Hotmail even still exists!
I pleaded to the team running the site for help. Once I provided information about myself to verify my identity, they helped me to get into my account and to update my address to something current, and I breathed a sigh of relief. As tempting as it is to see how quickly I could rebuild my portfolio with what I've learned about trading over the years, I really didn't want to start over, or to abandon the site.
So here's a public service announcement: Go update your email addresses on websites you joined a long time ago! You never know when you might get locked out and need email to get back in. And hey, why not start with Funeratic?
