Black Widow
Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
Fun but inessential. Natasha Romanoff is a terrific supporting character but is so ill-suited to the spotlight that she recedes into the background in her own eponymous film. This feels very much like a passing of the baton to Yelena Belova who is practically the co-lead, so it's fortunate that Florence Pugh is great in the part, equally adept at humor and pathos and action. One critic said that this feels like a throwback to earlier, simpler MCU films, which is on point; it's certainly entertaining but lacks the must-see epic quality of some other titles. I take issue with a few plot holes (I'll separate those in a comment below), and with the laughably physics-defying finale, and with a frustratingly underused villain, but everything else is solid: The running jokes and David Harbour's comic relief go a long way, and I genuinely cared about the relationships between the main characters and was stirred to hate their awful common enemy, and the action is impressive and thrilling, and I enjoyed Marvel in-jokes like Red Guardian's jailmate. Fun stuff.

Scott gives a more detailed review. I loved it. The humor and action were definitely throwbacks to earlier Marvel films. I didn't see Widow as a supporting character as much as I saw it as a 'buddy cop' movie with her and Pugh.
That final sequence though. Whew!

I enjoyed it. I'm a fan of Florence Pugh, and her role in this, I feel, outshone Scarlett Johansson, and set her up quite well to be part of the MCU going forward.

Matthew Preston: “It was ok.”
Florence Pugh is awesome as the likely "next" Widow, and I look forward to how she'll be appearing in the next MCU event (likely Hawkeye - I haven't watched all the episodes yet, so I don't know if that's the case). Outside of that though, I couldn't get past the campiness from David Harbour and Rachel Weisz. They made for enjoyable characters, but I kept getting pulled out of what should have been enjoyable moments.

Scott Hardie: In hindsight, I overrated this. It should have been a notch lower. It's fun but I wouldn't say that it's good. − December 22, 2021 more by Scott
Evie Totty: As time goes by (and seeing more movies in the theater) I have to agree with Scott. I have no desire to watch this again except to maybe "see things I missed the first time". − December 22, 2021 more by Evie
Erik Bates: I went back and tried to watch it again after writing my review above. I actually found myself bored early on and didn't finish. − December 23, 2021 more by Erik
Scott Hardie: Huh, weird. So it's not just me then. If we all experienced the same phenomenon, perhaps it was what Evie alluded to, some kind of excitement at seeing this kind of summer blockbuster action movie in theaters again that caused us to rate it too exuberantly? If Black Widow came out now, in the wake of much better and much worse titles, I think I'd have more clearly recognized its shortcomings. − December 26, 2021 more by Scott
