Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

It's a shame that this movie didn't get more widely seen; its box office take of only $77k is downright shocking. Then again, it appears to have had a tiny production budget, very little marketing, and its pace is so relaxed that the title becomes a bit of a joke. It's been called a superhero movie for black women, but it's not interested in race and it's not really about superpowers; they're only a plot device to force conversations between the characters. This is a drama and a character study first and foremost, and a particularly well-acted one, but that's no surprise with a cast that features Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lorraine Toussaint, and David Strathairn. I read online that it's being turned into an Amazon Prime TV series, and that's probably what it should have been from the start, because I could stand to see a lot more of these characters and this semi-post-apocalyptic world.
