Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”

As I get older, I often find that controversial art is usually subtler than the protestors understand. (A rare exception is the terrible Boondocks Saints. Also the Human Centipede.) the Joker has a lot on its mind and achieves the deft trick of deepening Batman mythology without telling a real Batman story. Somehow, somehow, Phoenix bests Ledger for the best Joker portrayal. Amazing work, amazing film. It’s not as deep ultimately as Phillips may want, but this also not incel garbage either. It is a complex and worthwhile piece of entertainment.

Scott Hardie: Wow. I skipped this precisely because it looked like incel garbage. I will take another look. − December 30, 2019 • more by Scott

Evie Totty: “It ruled.”

I had been reticent about watching this because I knew how it was going to affect me. At least I thought I knew. And I was actually correct. As I find my own mental health getting worse and worse - I saw on the screen just how bad it could get if situations were different. I'm not saying I would be homicidal - just that I already don't feel like myself.

It's hard to explain, really. I just know I burst into tears at the end of the film out of fear. Maybe even terror. A wave of emotion definitely hit me.

A very well-made film. Maybe even the best of the year.
