Denise Sawicki: “It ruled.”
I never watched the '80s cartoon in its original run and Darrell didn't either, but he had a lot of the toys and he was excited to watch this movie. He watched a lot of He-Man and She-Ra in the lead-up to watching the movie, and consequently, so did I. Funeratic isn't the audience that would criticize something as being "woke", but Masters of the Universe was always progressive. There were always PSAs emphasizing the importance of working with others and the value of brains over brawn, and not judging people by their appearances, etc. Also, Prince Adam always wore pink. I thought the movie was really good and really faithful to the old cartoon. Some said there were too many jokes and that they went on too long and often didn't land. I disagree. I think it would have been a mistake to try to make a revival of a cheesy cartoon into something deadly serious, anyhow! I thought it was hilarious, for instance, when everyone threw their heads back and laughed too long like they often did in the cartoon, and when Skeletor called someone a "boob". I'm known to have different taste than others on here, but anyway, I really liked it.This review contains spoilers. Reveal it.

Scott Hardie: You're talking me into seeing it. I grew up with the toys and cartoon, but I'm also happy to leave them behind in my distant past. It was never all that good of a series anyway, with a slapdash approach to world-building and a, let's say, care-free attitude towards internal logical consistency. But Netflix's Sha-Ra remake was shockingly good, and I shouldn't be so quick to write off the post-Barbie potential in this movie. I guess I grew tired of the same exhausted culture-war debate about whether it's "woke" and avoided it reflexively, because (much more than Barbie) it had to reconcile competing audience interests, and I figured it wouldn't be up to the challenge.
