Scott Hardie: “It was ok.”
I had hoped for a fun comedy, given this movie's great cast and amusing NSFW trailer. It's occasionally clever and funny, at its best when it skewers Hollywood egotism and disingenuousness, and when it follows the eccentricities of its characters to some truly weird places. But it's too low-energy and slack; trimming 20 minutes and tightening up the pace would have really helped. It also heaps way too much suffering on these vain actors; satire requires us to believe that they karmically deserve what happens to them, but nobody deserves this much misery, and that makes it hard to laugh. But I'll remember some of the best bits and cameos and sight gags; any movie where David Duchovny snorts cocaine off of Keegan-Michael Key's head can't be all bad.
