Week 101: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
I had completely forgotten about this movie. I remembered that it existed but it took me quite a while into the film to remember that, "Oh yeah, this is the one with Quill's dad." Even then I completely forgot the twist about how his mom died so there was a whole lot of me re-experiencing something I had already seen before, which was kind of fun.
Groot in general is the adorable comic relief of the entire movie. Him and Drax. It’s just the absolute innocent, cheeky nature of Groot that makes me laugh constantly. When he came in dragging that entire desk back to the brig, I just about lost it. The running gag about Taser Face was also quite hilarious.
I'm at the point now, watching the various movies and shows from the Marvel universe, that I can't remember what I've already watched in this project versus what I've just seen overall. When Gamora mentions that Thanos is her father, I couldn't help but try to remember if that was something we already knew or if that was something we found out later again. I just didn't catch it the first time I saw this movie.
There are so many moving parts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I just cannot keep them separate between what I've already watched in the project that we're doing here and just the greater canon as a whole. It's very much like Dr. Strange, seeing all possible outcomes at once, and I don't know which one is the one that actually happened.

Previous Week: Farewell Cruel World!

My opinion remains unchanged from 2017: This is fun with plenty of great lines, and it's more polished than the first film, but the villain is too oversimplified and the CGI takes over. Ego's planet never feels real. A few funny scenes are all-time greats (Taserface, the bomb buttons, Groot's opening dance, escaping the brig), but a lot of the rest is kind of forgettable. I liked each character's subtle evolution, maybe Nebula's the most. My favorite line this time was a quick line in an expository scene, when Ego explains that Quill can now manifest any matter he wants, and Quill gleefully declares, "I'm gonna make so much weird shit!" (7/10)
I suppose I don't have discussion questions, other than curiosity as to whether you found the film as enjoyable and yet forgettable as I did.
The music video for the David Hasselhoff song over the end credits is not to be missed.
