Week 113: 3 AM, Two Dead Men

I knew we were about to take a dark turn in the MCU with this series, but holy shit we took a dark and violent turn.

This is an amazing start to the series. We pick up on Castle finishing the work for avenging his family's death and going into hiding before he's once again befriended by someone who winds up needing his help. Hell Broke Luce by Tom Waits provides the soundtrack as Frank brutally takes out the gang of assholes who were trying to kills his new... workplace proximity associate.

In the closing seconds of the episode, a mysterious voice from the past, played by Bernthal's The Bear costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach sets us up for what I presume will be the driving plot of the episode, as we navigate this new problem intertwined with flashbacks and nightmares that consume our protagonist.

On the note of music. The opening theme was written by Tyler Bates (no relation). I had to look him up because the vibe of the theme felt like it was performed by The Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Alas, there doesn't appear to be a connection there, but I did find out that Bates wrote the score for Guardians of the Galaxy -- in addition to many other popular shows and movies.

I’m going to have to take this show in doses, I think. Binging multiple episodes in a day might be bad for my mental health. At minimum I’m going to have to interject some absurd humor to break it up a bit.

I am still thoroughly enjoying the show, though. Bringing Karen back — hopefully for more than one episode — is incredibly welcome. We desperately need her heart to offset Frank's lack of one. It’s Beauty and the Beast, but without the horrific misogyny.

Because that is reserved for Wolf. Holy shit what a horrible human being. I forgot to mention it in my episode 1 review, but Jesus this guy is the worst. If I had one gripe about the show so far, it’s that Wolf is such a too over-the-top horrible person that I don’t now how he doesn’t have a laundry list of HR complaints against him. Dude is a walking EEOC lawsuit.

Moss-Bachrach continues to impress me. He’s a great actor and I love him in this role. There was some debate in my house as to whether his wife knows that he’s alive and being watched. It appeared at one point that she looked directly at one of the hidden cameras. I’m pretty sure it’s hidden in/around the family photo in the kitchen though, and she was just looking at that.

David knows some stuff about Frank's past, and is holding that over him. But to what end? My prediction is that they’ll wind up joining forces, and Davis winds up dead for real, but not before his wife and family see him doing something truly heroic.

I forgot to mention Carson Wolf and the absolute horrific misogyny that they heaped upon his character. It was so incredibly overblown to the point I was about to call HR myself to see if they could look into him. That was some serious horse shit.
