Another desperate attempt of Erik Bates to create a blog that nobody will read. Expect illogical arguments with no basis in fact, and plenty of contradicting statements.

My Cunning Jayne Cobb hat

Looks like Lori isn't the only one that makes fun clothing based on obscure television shows :-) Cross-posted from my personal blog. Being the sci-fi nerd I am, coupled with my love of the short-lived series Firefly, when I realized that my knitting was getting pretty good, I decided that it was time to try my hand at creating something that every other true science fiction geek has done at one point or another: attempt to create a replica of an article of clothing from the series. My chosen article: Jayne Cobb's hat he received from his mother to keep him warm on his travels. Go »

On GooCon, and the rugged handsomeness of Scott Bakula

So this past weekend was GooCon, and I managed to make it out for the festivities on Saturday. I got to the house at about 8:30am, and finally got to meet the folks I'd been interacting with since 2003 (or 2002, if you count that first guess I randomly sent Scott). Granted, I'd met Scott before when we both happened to be in Chicago, and we had an impromptu man-date taking the double-decker bus tour of downtown Chicago. Go »

On a Fatal Flaw of Zombie Movies

I actually have this posted over on my blog, but considering the movie crowd we have here, I thought I'd share it. Zombie movies. They’re great. Go »

Beloit Mindset list gets a good talking-to

Cross-posted from my Higher Ed blog Beloit College releases the "Mindset List" every year since the class of 2002 (so, since 1998).  I try to read it every year, and every year I have comments in my own mind that sound a lot like what Linda Holmes over at NPR had to say about this year's list: Here's an example: Item Number 58 is "Beethoven has always been a dog." Really? Go »

Face-off

Today I got to thinking (dangerous, I know). What purpose is Facebook really serving in my life? Ok, so I'm "friends" with a couple hundred people, most of whom I know passively at best. Go »

The (Job) Hunt is on...

I registered for The Placement Exchange yesterday. I'm hitting the job search full-force in hopes of landing a full-time job in higher education again. Office Max is fun -- don't get me wrong -- but it's just not where I want to be long-term. Go »

Oh hey, I'm employed.

Did I mention that in my last post? I think I talked about applying for jobs, but I don't think I've mentioned that I finally got one. For the past 1 1/2 months, I've been working the minimum-wage gig at Office Max. Go »

Them Crooked Vultures

What do you get when you cross Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)? You get what is quite possibly the most important musical event of the past 3 years: Them Crooked Vultures. I've been excited about this album since I heard it was in the works, and now that I've heard it, I must say -- it was well worth the wait. Go »

I guess I'll chime in... again.

It's been a while since I've written anything. I have/had a personal blog elsewhere but I felt like I was writing for an audience that will never read what I write. This is a much better community over here. Go »

Dude didn't even get his degree!

Anyone who has ever eaten with me at a restaurant will know the issues I have with the offering of Mr. Pibb when I order Dr Pepper. Yes, Pibb is a cheap knock-off, but it is not the same thing. Go »

Shady dealings

Texas Tech has a policy for inviting candidates to campus for interviews. 1. If they offer me a job and I accept, they will cover the full cost of travel. Go »

Looking ahead

It's that time, folks. In just 4 days I graduate from the University of Kansas. In just 4 days you can all call me Erik Bates, M.S. Go »

This isn't a rant.... SIKE!

Funnily enough, this rant actually pertains to the word in the title of the post. I'm sure you all remember that fun joke. Borat would call it a "NOT joke." Go »

Tradition

Ok, I knew a good rant would come up sooner or later, and here it is. To begin, I feel we need to clarify some terms. new (adj.) Go »

The old, new James Bond...

What I want to know is, if this is about James Bond's first mission, why is the new M in charge? I mean, if you're going to go with the whole "there's only one James Bond" idea, you really should at least cast a man to be M to make it seem like it's in the past. Now the continuity of the James Bond series (if there is any, anyway) is all thrown off because with Judi Dench playing M, it would make sense that this is taking place AFTER the Pierce Brosnan Bond, which means that it's just a funny coincidence that the man they pick to be 007 just happens to be named James Bond. HAIR!

I would also like to add that the other day I realized that I hadn't shaved in about a week and a half. Ok, so it didn't just dawn on me suddenly. I'm just too lazy, and hate shaving. Go »

Reading, Riting, and Rithmatic...

Grad school is supposed to teach you so much more, I thought. I feel like I'm doing so much busy work lately. It's insane! Go »

Starting this thing off right

Let's get the party started already. I'm tired and I'm feeling like rambling for a while. I haven't read anybody else's posts in several weeks, so I can't really respond to anything going on in the XQC-osphere, and unlike what the title of this blog would imply, I have absolutely no rants or musings to share.
