I heard that Disney didn't turn a profit last year - they just about broke even, and the year before that, the money wasn't great. So, if that's true, I think the cheap remakes make sense for them right now.

True and true. These sequels are made by the direct-to-video animators, not the feature film animators, which explains both why they look so bad and why they're so cheap to make. Plus they don't bother getting the original voice talent - like Mel Gibson would do "Pocahontas II."
