AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem.

When does the next round begin?

Scott Hardie | November 17, 2006
You wanted to make this game yours, and I guess in a certain sense you just did. :-) At least you played with your heart in it. Be proud.

Steve Dunn | November 17, 2006
I think if I really want to be a contender, I need to be more of a student of the clues. I rarely even look at the "recent goos" for insight - I'll need to do this in the future, I think.

Congratulations to the elite players. I don't know how you do it.

Amy Austin | November 17, 2006
Aw, sure you do, Steve -- you just said so! ;-)

Steve Dunn | November 17, 2006
I've at least figured out there's usually some kind of pun involved.

Didn't do me no (@#$(**(@#%& good tonight, though.

YOU ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE, YOU GOO GAME YOU!!!!

Amy Austin | November 17, 2006
I feel your pain, Steve... I really do. I still keep grimacing at each additional correct guess to today's goo, since I had the answer to yesterday's *so close* within my grasp, but was just too damn tired and lazy to reach for it... and now I will have to keep trying to beat out 4 (so far) of this game's greatest players -- one of whom I feel like I should really be rooting for! ;-p

(I guess we both must secretly enjoy the pain, though... ;-) I'd say that it would be great to play an in-person game with many here someday, but it could also be scary to see the reactions that we are rarely privy to here... except from really bad pouters like you and myself. ;-D)

Mike Eberhart | November 18, 2006
AARRGGHHH!!!... Amy, I just had the same experience as you. I found the Sun Boyz, and the members, but I just couldn't pick any of them as my guess. I can't believe I was that close and didn't pick one. Oh well. Good luck with the rest of the game.

Amy Austin | November 18, 2006
Actually, I just commented on this in the elimination thread -- I am so fucking hot right now.

Sorry, Mike.

Amy Austin | November 18, 2006
Okay... here's 2)

I was not understanding Mike's "good luck with the rest of the game" comment -- but when I re-read the rules, I think I now do. Someone please help me understand:

...failure to guess two goos correctly (when at least one other player has guessed them right) eliminates a player from competition...

Yes, I thought I was eliminated after not getting my guess in before the gun... which I am still pissed about. And, for some reason, I also thought that Steve was still in the running... which is probably because of what I just mentioned. I'm just all out of sorts right now...

Mike Eberhart | November 18, 2006
Here's what I don't understand. It says the rounds over, but there were 2 correct guesses for that last goo. What gives?

Amy Austin | November 18, 2006
Mike, I'm sure that I am not helping matters by having split the same confusion between two discussions... see my other rant in Steve Dunn's GOO rant topic...

I mean... the elimination topic -- shit, see how addled I've become!!! I guess what it really boils down to is just being a really SORE and poor loser!!!

Steve West | November 18, 2006
Hey, I thought I was eliminated. Anything that puts me back in the game, I'm all for!

Amy Austin | November 18, 2006
Hehehe... at least you aren't a sore loser, Steve! I thought you had almost won it... or at least gotten your overdue Imelda. GOD, I feel ripped off!!!!!!!! ;-[]

Mike Eberhart | November 18, 2006
Yeah, Amy, I do too. I was looking at the Sun Boyz webpage in wiki and looking at the three members. I just didn't put any of the clues together to even make one of them my guess. The only inkling of an idea I had was that their name was spelled Boyz. Other than that, I just didn't clue in.

Scott Hardie | November 18, 2006
Ok, let me clear up some confusion:

Steve was eliminated a day earlier by not guessing Gregorio Fuentes when other players did get it. I'm amazed that Steve went to the trouble of finding Dennis Mak, but he was out of competition by then. Of the five remaining, only Elliot got Mak.

The "failure to guess two goos correctly" line in the rules was my error, and I apologize. Before the round started, I had planned to give less-elite players an extra chance in the finals by not eliminating them on their first incorrect guess - in other words, every player got a single freebie before their second error truly eliminated them. But it wasn't long into the round before I gave up on this plan for being overly complicated (both for all players to understand and me to program), and I thought I removed all reference to it from the site, but apparently I missed that spot. All email announcements and other mentions of the rules on the site have the correct rule: Failure to guess a single goo correctly (when one other player gets it right) eliminates you.

I gravely regret the confusion and I will consider ways to make up for it. Now would be a good time to ask me to finish that Awards page...

Mike Eberhart | November 18, 2006
Awards Page!!!!

Amy Austin | November 18, 2006
Awards Page, aye!!!

(hehehe... we're so vain... ;-p)

(we probably think this game is about us... ;-D)

Megan Baxter | November 18, 2006
Aah! I was looking at the Sun Boyz too, but thought that they all had movies under their belt too, and there was no Cinema category, so I only gave them a cursory look. Darn it!

Russ Wilhelm | November 18, 2006
Same here, but I only did cursory picture searches on Kenny Kwan and Steven Cheung (Founding members). I completey bypassed all the other members. I guess that's pretty sloppy on my part. I figured that "hugs and kisses" was x's & o's, but completely missed the connection to tic-tac-toe. Once I saw Elliot had entered the correct guess, I knew it was over for me, since I was no closer than I was when I first saw the goo. The guess I entered reflected how far off the mark I felt I was.

I'll have to work on that sloppiness, because I did the same thing with Charly Garcia. Only glanced at his bio, did a brief picture search,...It just didn't feel right. Maybe it's his resembalnce to Wierd Al. I dunno...

Anyway great game to all, and congrats to you, Elliot.

Scott Hardie | November 18, 2006
The "Cinema" category was part of the difficulty: The Sun Boyz did a few movies, yes, but none since Dennis Mak joined the band.

Mike Eberhart | November 18, 2006
I felt that since this was a "Master" level goo, Scott intentionaly left off extra categories just to make it more difficult. I just assumed that there had to be more categories applied to the goo, so I just looked for everything. I'm really ticked at myself that I came across this guy and didn't use them as my guess. The guy that I guessed was a last second, no chance guess only because I saw that Elliot/Steve got it right. I knew my guess was wrong when I made it, but it was better than nothing.

Scott Hardie | November 19, 2006
The Player Awards page is back. There's still more I plan to add to it when I have the time (read: not soon).

Good thinking entering a hail-mary guess, Mike. It's always smarter to guess something than nothing.

Amy Austin | November 20, 2006
Yes... a habit that I will have to recondition myself to do, too... because ever since there was a penalty for guessing wrong (in the former grid-style, second incarnation), I have made a point of refraining from my natural tendency to "hail-mary guesses" -- and regrettably so, since I lost 3 more goos this way this round (well, Mak wasn't a "hail-mary"... but I am counting that one): Mak, Buck O'Neil (lazy on the image checking, because I just would have *sworn* that it was a white guy...), and Jenny Lee (was going to enter "Jennifer Lee" just on grounds of it being an uncommonly common name and also high likelihood for the clue... sorry, Jennifer!) -- boy was I pissed that I didn't go ahead with that one... would have been 3 Imeldas in a row!!! (Sigh... feeling yet another big pout coming on... ;-p)

Unrelated side-note to Mike: I had to re-read your comment twice, because I kept seeing that you were "tickled" at yourself, instead of "ticked" -- hence my other tendency... to over-state matters with phrasing such as "fucking pissed"... ;-)
