1) Nerd is chic right now. Her glasses, that upturned hair, those suits... She wouldn't have the same sex appeal in 1998 or 2018.

2) Men are pigs. JFK and Obama had their female admirers, but the appreciation never became this vulgar, at least not in the public arena.

3) Compare her to other women who have been on the national political stage. Hillary Clinton. Elizabeth Dole. Condoleezza Rice. Madeleine Albright. Janet Reno (!). In the political Am-I-Hot-or-Not rankings, Palin scores big.

4) It's an easy hook to hang jokes on, like McCain's age. Boil the person down to the base essence of their celebrity; crack wise about this one dimension. It's worked for Jay Leno for years.

Politics and Scott's good answers aside... I think SP is a very attractive woman. Imo, even "hot" can apply... and certainly moreso than Nancy Pelosi (shudder). Judging her solely on her looks -- empirically speaking -- I think she's definitely a very attractive woman. Just *not* an attractive VP candidate. At all.

Okay... don't know what year, but on this one, I'll concede.

Nancy Pelosi in 1983... I was thinking this.

As usual, I'll let The Onion speak for me:

Oh, Onion... how you make me cry... with peals of laughter. (Quietly to myself, of course.)
