High court takes 'Bong Hits for Jesus' case. Heh. Nice headline.

What do you think about this long-standing controversy? The kid claims he has first-amendment rights to say what we wants off of school grounds, but the school has a clear policy about promoting drug use and he was at a school-sponsored event with teachers.

Me, I'm inclined to side with the school. During training to be a teacher in college, it was made clear to me that in loco parentis trumps civil liberties such as the first amendment, since the students are still minors, and that that's necessary for a school to function. This kid is clever and all, but messages and campaigns more important than "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" have justifiably been shot down in the principal's office, so why does he think his prank is worthy of being taken up as far as the Supreme Court?

As much as I want this country to make MJ a legal drug (like beer) this court case does nothing for that cause. IMO this is a waste of the courts time. Common sense says that the youth in questions actions would be, at a minimum, in bad taste for an adult, and even criminal in my case (Department of Defence). In this day and age why are wasting our judicial credibility on a case that has so little impact for either the world we live in today or the future???

Well said, and I agree. This shouldn't have made it as far as the county school board.
