I'm saddened this morning at the passing of Curtis Hanson, co-writer & director of two of my favorite movies, L.A. Confidential and Wonder Boys. I've seen each at least ten times and I keep finding new things to love in them each time; they're masterpieces of mood and detail. I also enjoyed his 8 Mile with Eminem; less so In Her Shoes with Cameron Diaz. I never went back to his earlier films like The River WIld and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle but now I think I should. Health problems prevented Hanson from finishing his last film and forced him into retirement years ago, so this isn't a surprise, but it is a disappointment. In interviews, he was so intelligent and committed to his work, full of passion for the minute details of every project. I'm glad that he got to make the movies that he did. Go see L.A. Confidential or Wonder Boys if you haven't; they're worthy of their widespread praise. Did you have a favorite among his work?

I was disappointed to see Wonder Boys completely ignored in AV Club's recent list of the 50 best comedies of the new millenium and the follow-up discussion. I have to believe that it was simply forgotten and not deliberately ranked below some of those other titles. :-\
