My mother feels the same way about space exploration. It drives me nuts.

As I see it, space exploration is important because it is eminently natural for us, as people, to explore our surroundings and expand our horizons. There's a great big universe out there, and if we didn't explore it we just wouldn't be humans.

I have a weekly lunch with a group of political conservatives. They were griping about Bush's talk of going to Mars a few weeks ago. I suggested they would have been opposed to Queen Isabella's funding Columbus' exploration of the New World.

They agreed.

People rarely think about what's going to matter in 500 or 1000 years. Some of the anti-space commentary I've heard lately is that NASA money should be used for something more "important." I strongly suspect, however, that in 500 years, no one will know or care about 99.5% of our domestic spending programs. But if we went to Mars... if we established a base on the moon.... these are human achievements that mark our progress as a species, as a planet. You gotta shoot for that kind of stuff when you can. We can, so we must.

Yet again, words from another un-educated, anti-government, left-wing celebrity. Who needs them? I sure as hell don't. Plus, country music SUCKS!!!...
