To the last person who commented before you in this discussion, recommend an album or song that you think they'll like, and maybe say why.

When someone gives you a recommendation, try it and see what you think, and then report back to us.

Let's see if we can discover some good music. :-)

That album is excellent, Erik! I have queued up several more albums by those guys on Spotify and will listen to them quite a bit.

I listened to a lot of thrash metal in high school and could have given you plenty of names back then. These days, when I listen to any metal at all, it's three of the big four -- Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer -- whose shit is plenty heavy if you ask me.

Outside of the big names, the best metal that I've come across recently is Decapitated. I don't normally go for the guttural "death growl" popularized by Cannibal Corpse (it's too self-serious and deserving of parody), but Decapitated pulls it off. I've gotten through several noisy days at the office with Decapitated ringing in my ears to drown out coworkers.

For an overview of metal subgenres and the top names in each, AV Club's primer is a pretty good summary. I second their album recommendations at the bottom if you're looking for more.

My biggest blind spot has to be roots music and folk music. I can name plenty of artists (running Rock Block helps), but I have heard very little that I like. Can anyone suggest a roots or folk album that you think I'd like?
