though I have snowshoed quite recently I've only Xcross country ski'd once and I wasn't in shape for it at that time but I have learned through experience that there are somethings you should put your money toward and there are somethings you can buy used. That said boots even inexpensive ones you need to try on and if possible buy local that way if you have any problems you have someone to see, don't think I am saying skimp on your feet I have been best served by the motto of buying the least expensive/complex shoes my feet are comfortable in because if your feet hurt nothing else will be fun . Ski's/binding/poles you can often get as a starter set that will serve you fine for a year or two while you figure out what expensive gear you want/desire. Used is also a viable option especially for top end gear, watch Ebay and craig's list in the next few months. Check out you local REI and join the co-op they all have classes, members shopping (they call it garage sales here) and events that are announce via email to members. Clothing wise other than hands and head I have never needed as much clothing when exercising as I have when walking to and from the car.......however I have never been called fashionable.....especially when it comes to sports fashion, I find what works for me and stick with it see below. I would imagine that you would be better served by a nice shell some layers and a small backpack to shed layers to in case it gets warm, at least on top. Silk longjohns and a set of windproof (maybe cycling) tights would likely do just fine for the bottom. Last year I went out on one of the coldest days of the year (because snow conditions were good)....I wore silk Long johns with uninsulated shell pants a mock turtle neck and a soft shell jacket (lightly insulated) hands and head were well insulated but standing in the parking lot was brutal. Once I was exercising I was sweating and light gear allowed me to dissipate heat and sweat so I never got cold

and finally Find a good Cross Country Ski forum like maybe this one and do your research
