12 Years a Slave

Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”
The word masterpiece gets thrown around a lot, but this is hands down a masterpiece. The acting, cinematography, writing, score, and everything else come together perfectly. Steve McQueen legitimately pulled a Spielberg in making unimaginable human tragedy live and breathe. As a result, it's painful to watch - probably more upsetting to me than Schindler's List, Munich, Paradise Now, or any number of the classic downer movies. It's also something that I think everyone in America should see.
