Scott Hardie: “It was ok.”
For a comedy about retired but still practicing musicians, that takes place on a lush country estate in England, it's no wonder that this movie looks and sounds amazing. Maggie Smith and Billy Connolly are especially good in this actors' showcase. But the script is a huge weakness: This extravagant retirement home having a tiny staff and being funded by a tiny gala doesn't feel remotely plausible, and the conflicts just aren't compelling. I imagine that the original play went over much better on stage.
