Matthew Preston: “It ruled.”

The film takes place in Batavia, IL in 1988, with a bunch of friends obsessed with Nintendo. To say that this premise emanates with me is an understatement. Both Scott and I grew up in St. Charles, IL, a mere 5 miles from Batavia. There are so many callbacks to the area and to the era. They nailed it nearly perfectly.

The film does have its flaws at times, but it was a good heartwarming family film (if you can stomach repeated projectile Spaghettio vomiting). Honestly would have been "It was ok" if the whole thing didn't take place during my EXACT childhood.

Scott Hardie: Kelly will probably skip this for the reason you cited (she's a sympathy vomiter) but I'll check it out. The premise sounded so much like a bullseye to my childhood in terms of time period and subject matter that I'm delighted to hear that it takes place geographically close to home as well. − December 26, 2021 • more by Scott
