Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

I know nothing about the young-adult mystery series that this film is based on, so I can't say whether it's a faithful adaptation. But as a fan of Sherlock Holmes, I enjoyed the fresh take on his world, letting us see its historical injustice through fresh eyes. And I appreciate that Hollywood is getting away from the "strong female" heroine archetype who must be stoic and flawless; Enola cries and feels fear, but presses on anyway, and is stronger in that way.
Millie Bobby Brown is a star, and proves it again by carrying this film; she has a long career ahead of her. This is an entertaining mystery, albeit an easy one to figure out. My only real quibble is with the anticlimactic ending, since several subplots were left unresolved, for sequels perhaps. If they get made, I'll watch them. This review contains spoilers. Reveal it.
