Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”
It’s so great to see an artist you admire grow. Recently, I’ve seen an entire wing of directors grow into areas of depth and complexity I never expected. Quentin is up there with Taylor Swift (!) as the artist with the greatest growth curve in the past few years.
To talk about this movie much is to get spoilery. I’ll say this - it’s perfect and appropriately wistful. The controversy about the ending is silly - anyone who has seen any Tarantino movie since Inglourious Basterds (including Django and Hateful Eight) should have seen it coming. It’s a trend in his form.

Erik Bates: “It ruled.”
Well, I'm glad this hit the Redbox so I could see it before the end of the year, because it definitely made an impact on my Best Movies of the Year voting.
Fun fact/blasphemy: I've never seen Jackie Brown. I've never finished Reservoir Dogs.
I think, to Samir's point, though, that the fact that I have those reactions to those early films, and the fact that I have enjoyed Kill Bill, Basterds, Django, Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time... so damn much is a testament to how much Tarantino has improved over the years.
I should probably see Jackie Brown, though.
