When Marnie Was There
Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
I'm sad to read that this will probably be Studio Ghibli's last feature film, because it seems to me like proof that the company can carry on without the retired Hiyao Miyazaki, creatively and commercially. It has the essential humanity, gentle patience, beautiful animation, and strong attention to detail that characterize Miyazaki's best work. While the turns of the plot are not exactly difficult to guess, it's nevertheless a moving story, superbly told. This is one of the best films of the year.
