Today is Funeratic's 28th birthday. In one sense, it no longer surprises me when the site reaches another long-in-the-tooth milestone, because it has passed so many by now that feel impossible! And yet... 28 is OLD for a web site. When I was 28, I had been a professional web developer for several years and was just taking over management of the department, a career that was only possible because of the skills that I'd learned from Funeratic, which was itself only 10 at the time. My head spins at this sort of thing.
This will be the first year since the History of Funeratic feature debuted that I won't be adding to it. Part of that is a matter of practical impossibility; I'm in the hospital for a few days dealing with an infected leg. (No worries! My prognosis is great.) Updating it from here just can't happen. And the other reason is emotional: If the theme of the History feature is the intersection of Funeratic and real life, one of the main events this year has been sharing my post-pandemic diagnoses in that series of grim blog posts, which were very difficult to write in the first place and which I'm not eager to revisit so soon, especially from a hospital bed of all places. I hope to be in a much better place next year, figuratively and literally.
As always, I remain awed and grateful that so many of you continue to stick around to play these silly games and keep the conversations going. You're why I do it. Thanks for making each of our 28 years so much fun, and here's looking forward to the 29th. :-)
