Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
Jack Black makes this whole comedy work, by completely transforming himself into the weird, effeminate, and utterly generous Bernie Tiede. The movie takes pains to straddle the line between guilty and innocent, not definitively deciding whether Tiede intentionally set himself up to profit from the widow's murder or whether his friendship with her was genuine and he merely snapped from her years of verbal abuse. Either way, the movie is much more interested in showing how strange it is that a community can rally around a murderer if he's a nice enough person, and the on-camera interviews with real residents of Carthage, Texas talking about the real incident really helps to give the movie a quirky, could-only-happen-in-real-life spirit. It's as if the Coen brothers made an episode of King of the Hill where a slightly gay Hank Hill finally lost it and killed some rude old bitch that everybody hated and the town tries to get him acquitted. This review contains spoilers. Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”
Terrific, career performance by Jack Black. Quirky, insightful, and thoroughly engaging.
