Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
James Herbert's ghost stories don't always translate well to screen, but this one has the benefit of being a three-part BBC adaptation with time for world-building and character development. It tells a compelling story with an outstanding setting, and it makes the most of the emotional turmoil driving its characters. But the main protagonist is a problem: She's wildly inconsistent, under-emoting one scene and over-emoting the next, and the movie forgets that she's the lead character in its final stretch and sidelines her, losing its narrative focus a little in the process. This isn't a great ghost movie, but it's a good enough one if you like the genre. This review contains spoilers. Reveal it.
