Dolemite is My Name
2019
When 1970s counterculture comedian Rudy Ray Moore can't get his career ignited, he creates a foul-mouthed alter ego -- badass pimp Dolemite -- and ultimately parlays the character into a big-screen blaxploitation superstar.

Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”

OH YES! Eddie coming back in perfect form was one of the best surprises of the year. A wonderful little biopic about the maker of Dolemite, it worked nicely as a showcase. The director pulled together a nice ensemble cast and managed it well.

Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”

I really enjoyed this. Eddie Murphy is great as both the endlessly optimistic Rudy Ray Moore and the endlessly riffing and rhyming Dolemite, and the rest of the cast is very funny too. I haven't seen the movie Dolemite whose production is recreated here, but I have seen another of Moore's films, and it was pretty close to what's shown here: Ramshackle and ineptly made, but funny and loose and proud and idiosyncratic. I feel inspired by watching Moore will his dreams to come true.
