Evie Totty: “It was ok.”
I actually want to lean to the 'It ruled' side but I can't. The story was. So. Bad.
The special effects on the other had, impressive (note: I saw it in IMAX 3D). Idris Elba did a wonderful job as the stoic leader.
Charlie Day though - he made the film for me. I could watch that character in his own movie (and maybe I will if they do a sequal, which is rumored to be happening due to the Asian returns).
Worth seeing? Sure. But only once.

Erik Bates: “It sucked.”
I like the idea, and I wanted to like the movie. Unfortunately, the movie committed some sins that I just can't get past (at least not without a more engaging plot line.
1. Completely unnecessary love story - They didn't come right out and make a love story, but by the end, it was strongly implied.
2. Furthering the plot with convenient science - The Kaiju all have a hive mind (because of course they do), which allows for the scientist from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia to drift with them, but only after accessing their second brain that's easier to get to (because of course they have as second brain less shielded than the first), and they all have identical DNA because they're all clones of one another, despite each one looking completely different and having different abilities. And, of course, the Kaiju with the EMP pulse on it's back will wipe out all electronics, unless, of course, those electronics are powered by a diesel engine instead of a nuclear one (or was that the other way around? I forget what type of mind-melding computer program is impervious to inter-dimensional non-identical exact-DNA copy clone EMP pulses).
3. Under-utilizing Idris Elba - demeaning himself to a point that he is essentially rehashing Bill Pullman's speech from Independence Day. You're better than this, Idris. Much better. This review contains spoilers. Reveal it.
