I always thought sand sculpture was way cool, too, and yeah... impossible to believe it's *only* sand and water. I have always thought that there must be some other trick to it -- an armature, at the very least -- because I really don't believe that there's any way that sand/water alone can do these things.
Well, it appears that I was right to think so (again, I always read commentary, and some other Amy was curious like I was, made to feel a dolt, and then answered with what only makes sense to me...):

They use a weak cement mix with the sand so it will be able to stay up for a month and a bit it is still an annual event and costs 20 bucks but it comes complete with cute canadian girls
Now I'm just wondering how the "canadian girls" contribute... are they buried inside, or do they act as buttresses while the sculptures are being built? (hardy-har-har...)

What motivates people with obvious talent to create something that, by design, lasts potentially a matter of hours? Obviously, there are mediums that are more conducive to longevity and I suppose photographs of their creations can last forever, but still... All I would get from a day at the beach are third degree burns and a pile of crap that I would title "Oatmeal, sort of (if you squinted and it was dark)".
