I think what Lori means is that it is a quote that when said, someone willa utmoatically be able to reference it. Like "May the Force Be with You"

Scott Hardie | November 19, 2004
I don't know about that. Those of us discussing this so far are in our mid-twenties, and yet we know most of the ones on the list, or so I presume because nobody has complained yet about any obscurity. AFI says that one criterion for inclusion is that the quote transcends the film, such as the quotes that enter our lexicon and we don't even realize what they're from. Few people remember the film "She Done Him Wrong," but Mae West's famous "Why don't you come up sometime and see me?" has attained cultural permanence. (I almost hope there's a famous misquotes section of the program. "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?" and "Play it again, Sam" come to mind immediately.)

I know why the AFI does this presentation every year, but I wonder how much longer they can get away with calling it "100 Years," since they're coming up on year nine of the program already. "100 Greatest Movie Quotes" doesn't sound significantly worse than "100 Years, 100 Movie Quotes."

Thanks to the Associated Press, I've read about the list and know some of the front-runners (not that I couldn't guess them), but Adobe Acrobat/Reader won't install on my home computer. Would anybody be so kind as to copy and paste the list here? I can't find a text or HTML version on their site.

Erik Bates | November 19, 2004

Scott Hardie | November 19, 2004
The first misquote confuses the correct order of the words. The other misquote, "Play it again, Sam," is never actually said in "Casablanca." It's like the famous quote "Beam me up, Scotty" that is never actually said in any "Star Trek" episode or movie. I'm also reminded of "Houston, we have a problem," which is said that way in the movie, but in real life was said "Houston, we've had a problem."

John E Gunter | November 19, 2004
Well, to copy and paste from Acrobat 5.0, you select the Text Select Tool, then select the text, copy and paste. Simple, easy, effective.

Not sure you can do it with just Acrobat Reader, since I have the full program, not just reader. But at the risk of getting in trouble with AFI, the list follows in a separate post.

Scott Hardie | November 19, 2004
You could email it to me, John. I'd be happy to do the forwarding from there for anyone else who wants it. Either way, thanks.

Mike Eberhart | November 19, 2004
Tommy: Did you hear I graduated?
Richard: Yeah and just a shade under a decade. All right.
Tommy: A lot of people go to college for seven years.
Richard: Yeah, they're called doctors.

Mike Eberhart | November 19, 2004
"Okay... seatbelts. Just put the little thing into the big thing and... I tell ya what. If you don't know how to fasten your seatbelt, just raise your hand and I'll have Tommy Boy here come back there and hit you in the head with a tack hammer because you're a RETARD!"

"The queen. The vatican. The Getty's. The Rothschilds. AND Colonel Sanders before he went heads up! Oh, I hated the Colonel with his wee BEADY eyes! and that smug look on his face, 'Oh! You're gonna buy my chicken, OHHH!"

I think my favorite quotes are the Airplane quotes.

(sidenote) I was in the theater seeing Scary Movie 3 (I know you're all asking yourself why would I do this) There is one seen where Anna Faris' character is fighting the evil chick in it. Leslie Nielson opens the door, says "we're all counting on you.", and leaves. I was the only one in the packed theater that laughed.

Heh, I might have just single handedly made one of the longer threads!

I haven't read all of the quotes yet, but I'm not sure about the accuracy of one of them. The Field of Dreams one about..."If you build it, he will come." I had thought that was Cosner's character saying that, not Shoeless Joe. To make ammends for his problems with his father, but maybe not. I'll have to watch the film again to see if they give credit to the voice in the field.

John, I think in the book Shoeless Joe from which the movie is based, Roy says that. But in the movie it is a voice over. And it is Ray Liotta's voice saying that.

John E Gunter | November 19, 2004
Never read the book, maybe I need to get it. :-)

Guess it sounded more like Cosner to me than Liotta.

It wasn't a very well written book. All I remember about it is that in the beginning of the book Roy Kinsella talks about his childhood. In the book, he and his identical twin brother gets their dicks hard and measure them to see if they really are entirely identical.

ROFLMAO!

ScottieHo, why does it not surprise me that you'd remember that fact about the book! ;-)

I didn't get very far into the book. After that, I kind of stopped reading it.

Their choice from Horse Feathers is terrible. Groucho's lines earlier are much better, to wit --

PROFESSOR QUINCY ADAMS WAGSTAFF (Groucho Marx): I wanted a son. Imagine my disappointment when you came along.

PROFESSOR QUINCY ADAMS WAGSTAFF (Groucho Marx): I'd horsewhip you if I had a horse!

And of course, the "swordfish" scene, the only one that really survived the movie.

Likewise, though Duck Soup was decently represented, they picked the wrong bit from the trial scene, this exchange is much better and generally more often quoted --

RUFUS T. FIREFLY (Groucho Marx): Pick a number between one and ten!
CHICOLINI (Chico Marx): Eleven.
RUFUS T. FIREFLY (Groucho Marx): Good! Now, Chicolini here may look like an idiot, and talk like an idiot, but don't let that fool you; he really is an idiot.

And, while it's less popular, Animal Crackers has a better line than the well-known elephant bit (which AFI left off part of -- the horrible "Tuscaloosa" pun) --

CAPTAIN JEFFREY T. SPAULDING (Groucho Marx): We also took pictures of the native girls, but they aren't developed yet. But we're going back in a few weeks.

I'm glad they had "It's good to be the king" , one of my favorite mel brooks quotes.

Kris Weberg | November 19, 2004
I'm surprised that not one line from the classic His Girl Friday made it in there. I hate-hate-hate Cary Grant romantic comedies, and blame him for helping birth the genre, but that one was immensely funny largely because it's the most cynical romantic comedy ever made. The nice guy doesn't just finish last, he and his mother wind up robbed of massive amounts of money and improperly jailed at various points. Meanwhile, the manipulative, sleazy Grant character and the brassy, thrill-addicted leading lady discover that they don't much like each other, but unlike the rest of the world, they're at least a match for one another in the wits department.

Best line?

"I wouldn't cover the burning of Rome for you if they were just lighting it up!"

I take it this list includes American films only? "A Clockwork Orange" and "Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail" are two of the most over-quoted movies I've ever seen, but neither are on the list, and it's the American Film Institute after all. Is "2001: A Space Odyssey" considered an American film?

"Army of Darkness" comes to mind as one film I've heard quoted endlessly since its release, not that I like it. Incidentally, "The Evil Dead" might get yet another remake: (link) Fans probably heard already, but it's news to me.

I think the quotes they used from 2001 has every quote in the entire movie. It only has like 20 minutes of dialog in its entire 3 hour span.

Kris Weberg | November 20, 2004
It's only American films, this being the American Film Institute. Kubrick worked through the American studio system for both Doctor Strangelove and 2001, so I guess that makes them American movies.

Note that this means the likes of Fritz Lang and Jean-Luc Godard will tus be excluded. I suppose the inclusion of the little-seen Kiss Me Deadly was an oblique nod to the French New Wave, though, being an inspiration for Godard and others thanks to a serendipitous mutilation of its widely-distributed cut that ensured that, for most audiences, the flick ended with the hero and his girlfriend seemingly being obliterated in the denoument.

(I recommend Kiss Me Deadly to all who can enjoy it; it's every paranoid fantasy of the 50s wrapped in a scathing critique of the film noir detective, and might have indirectly inspired a bit of Pulp Fiction. Just bear in mind two things when watching it: physics and continuity are second to allegory, and you're supposed to hate Mike Hammer.)

In case anyone missed it, the final list was presented last night. (link)
